MILLERSVILLE—The Bloomsburg University softball team used timely from Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) and strong pitching to blank Millersville University by scores of 7-0 and 3-0 on Monday in PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) action. Bertoni drove in six runs between the two games and the Huskies' pitchers allowed a combined four hits for the doubleheader.

In game the Huskies wasted little time in getting to Marauders' starter Cassidy Pinchorski. With one out in the top of the first Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) doubled and came around to score when Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) also doubled making it 1-0. Bertoni, a transfer from Millersville, then drilled a home run to left center for a 3-0 lead.

The Huskies added to their lead in the second inning. Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill/Upper Darby) led off with double and took third one out later when Yanora singled. After O'Connor walked to load the bases, Bertoni delivered a two-run single to center with Quinlan and Yanora coming into score making it 5-0.

Bloomsburg tacked on a single run in the fourth when O'Connor doubled for the second time with Yanora coming in to score. Then in the sixth Bertoni hit a sacrifice fly making it 7-0.

The offense was all that pitchers Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) and Sarah Bortner (Glenville/South Western) needed for Bloomsburg. Parker went the first three innings and did not allow a hit while walking one and striking out three. Bortner got the win going the final four innings and allowing two hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Bertoni finished 2-3 with five RBI and a run scored.

In game two Bloomsburg got a two-hit shutout from Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) to sweep the twinbill. Tomaschik faced just one jam in the game when she surrendered a double and a single with one out in the fourth inning of a scoreless game. The sophomore, though, got a strike out looking and a fly out to center to escape the threat.

The Huskies finally broke through in the sixth inning scoring one time. Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) reached on an error leading off the inning. After moving to second on bunt single by Yanora, McHale scored the first run on a single to right by Bertoni.

Bloomsburg added some insurance in the seventh inning. With one out Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) singled with pinch hitter Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) walking to put runners at first and second. Both runners moved up on a ground out, then came around to score when McHale singled through the shortstop making it 3-0.

Tomaschik then closed out the game getting the first two outs via strike out and ending the game with a grounder. Overall she fanned eight and did not allow a walk.

For the doubleheader Bertoni was a combined 3-6 with six RBI.

The Huskies, 9-7, 4-2 in the PSAC East, are scheduled to host Shippensburg on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Jan Hutchinson Field.
