Field Hockey Team Drops Heartbreaker to Shippensburg

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG—The eight-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team lost 1-0 (2-0 in shootout) to second-ranked Shippensburg University on Saturday at Steph Pettit Stadium.

The Huskies held the edge in the first half of the scoreless game getting off five shots to just three for the Raiders and held the 8-3 edge in penalty corners.

In the second half the Raiders turned the tables holding an 8-1 edge in shots on goal and a 5-1 margin in penalty corners. Bloomsburg goalie Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) was brilliant in the cage stopping seven shots in the final 35 minutes of regulation. In the final 30 seconds, though, it was Shippensburg goalie Taylor Webster that forced overtime with a save of a Tess Shelly (New Cumberland/Cedar Cliff) shot.

In the first overtime Cassel was again solid with seven more saves as the Raiders held an 8-2 edge in shots forcing the teams to a second 15-minute extra session.

The second overtime saw less action until the final 10 seconds when Suzanne Muller was awarded a penalty stroke with 8.9 seconds to play. Cassel, though, made another outstanding stop keeping the game scoreless and sending the game to strokes.

In the shootout session the Raiders connected on their first shots to go up 2-0. After both teams missed their third shots, Shippensburg missed on its fourth. Needing to make two shots to at best force a sudden-death round, the Huskies failed on their fourth attempt ending the game.

For the game Cassel stopped a total of 17 shots.

Bloomsburg is now 4-2, while Shippensburg is now 5-1. The Huskies host Slippery Rock on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
