StatisticsLAST TIME OUT ...Bloomsburg jumped out to a 63-36 lead after three quarters but had to hang on for a 76-70 victory at Kutztown on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies led from wire-to-wire but were outscored in the fourth quarter by a 34-13 margin, giving up 19 points off turnovers to the Golden Bears in the final period. Bloomsburg shot 30-of-56 (53.6%) from the field - the fifth time this season (all in the last six games) that the Huskies have been over 50%.
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) recorded her eighth double-double of the season, but her first since December 4, with 24 points and 11 rebounds. She was, however, limited to just four points and four rebounds in the second half after getting off to a blazing start.
Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) poured in a career-high 22 points - the first 20-point effort of her collegiate career.
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) (11) and
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) (10) also finished in double figures.
DID YOU KNOW ...Bloomsburg's loss at Edinboro on Wednesday, January 6, was the first loss by a Huskies' team in the month of January since a 65-59 loss to West Chester on January 26, 2013. Since that loss, Bloomsburg had rattled off 21 straight victories in January prior to Wednesday.
THE MILLERSVILLE SERIES ...Millersville leads the all-time series, 40-39, but the Huskies have won three straight, and seven of the last ten, between the two schools. The three Marauder victories during the stretch, which came in a row from December 8, 2012 to November 20, 2013, were won by a combined total of 15 points. Five of Bloomsburg's seven wins over the last ten meetings have been by double figures.
LAST MEETING AGAINST MILLERSVILLE ...Bloomsburg and Millersville last played on February 21, 2015 at Millersville's Pucillo Gymnasium with the Huskies leaving with an 87-59 victory over the Marauders. Bloomsburg jumped out to a 39-23 lead at halftime and then extended the lead to as many as 33 points early in the second half before settling for the 28-point victory. The Huskies shot 54.1% from the field and made 10-of-20 three-point attempts in the victory. Bloomsburg also held a slight 31-26 advantage in rebounding.
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) led the Huskies with 24 points while
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) (14),
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) (14), and
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) (12) also finished in double digits. Shelby Reimer had 17 points to lead the Marauders.

SCOUTING MILLERSVILLE ...Millersville enters the contest with an 8-6 overall record but a 5-6 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Marauders last played on Saturday and suffered a 74-58 loss at home against Shippensburg - Millersville's second consecutive setback. The Marauders opened the campaign with three losses in their first four games but have since won seven of their last ten. The Marauders are 5-2 thus far at Pucillo Gymnasium. Millersville is 14th out of 18 teams in the PSAC by averaging only 62.6 points per game on offense. But, the Marauders bring the league's stingiest defense into the matchup as Millersville has allowed only 59.8 points per game on the season. Celeste Robinson paces the Marauders by averaging 14.8 points per game while Shelby Reimer is the only other player averaging double digits as she adds 10.9 points per contest. Yasmin Cooper is a double-double threat, averaging 9.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Millersville shoots 41.2% from the field but allows its opponents to shoot only 37.3% on the season. The Marauders are not much of a threat from long range as the team has made only 52 threes in 14 games and have shot just 25.2% from beyond the arc. They are 16th in the conference in threes made per game (3.7) and 17th in percentage. Reimer has made 29 of the team's 52 triples. Millersville also struggles from the free throw line, shooting just 63.0% from the charity stripe - dead last in the PSAC.
EIGHT IS NOT ENOUGH ...Junior
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) recorded her eighth double-double of the season during Saturday's 76-70 win at Kutztown. She posted 24 points and added 11 rebounds, establishing a career-high with 10 made field goals in the process. It was her first double-double, however, since December 4 when the Huskies defeated Mercyhurst, 66-61, in double overtime - the last of her seven consecutive double-doubles to start the season. Despite the dry spell, Hopkins is still averaging double figures in points (19.1) and rebounds (10.2) this season.
ROSS HAS CAREER DAY ...Junior
Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) poured in a career-high 22 points in Saturday's victory at Kutztown, marking the first time in her collegiate career that she had eclipsed 20 points in a game. Her previous high was 18 against the University of the Sciences on November 29. She tied a career-high with nine made field goals (13 attempts) and went 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Ross is taking advantage of a significant increase in playing time this season, also adding her first career double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) earlier this year in the loss to Gannon on December 5. She averaged 1.0 point and 1.1 rebounds as a freshman and then 1.2 points and 1.7 rebounds last season. This season, she is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game, is tied for third in rebounding at 4.9 boards per contest, and is third in assists per game (2.4).
CUTTING DOWN ON THREES ...Bloomsburg has struggled from long distance all season as it enters the contest against Millersville ranked 13th in the conference in three-point shooting percentage (29.1%). The Huskies have made 77 threes in 14 games (5.5 per game) - 11th in the conference. So, on Saturday, the Huskies decided to go away from the long ball attempting only five triples the entire game (two makes). As a result, the Huskies scored 48 of their 76 points in the paint against the Golden Bears - the team's second-highest total of the season.
SHOOTING STRUGGLES A SURPRISE ...Bloomsburg entered Wednesday's game at Edinboro tied for second in the PSAC, and 22nd in the country, by shooting at a 45.3% clip on the season. That figure, however, dropped drastically against the Fighting Scots as the Huskies managed to make just 19 of their 63 shot attempts on the night (30.2%). It was just the third time this season that Bloomsburg shot worse than 40% from the field and the Huskies had shot no worse than 36.5% in any one game prior to Wednesday's loss. Bloomsburg bounced back on Saturday to shoot 53.6% from the field - the fifth time in the last six games that the Huskies have shot 50% or better. However, the Huskies, who entered second in the PSAC in free throw percentage, went just 14-of-28 from the line against the Golden Bears to drop them to fifth in the league (72.5%).
TOO MANY SECOND CHANCES ...The Huskies allowed 22 offensive rebounds to Kutztown on Saturday and now have allowed 224 offensive rebounds to their opponents during the season. That figure equates to an average of 16.0 offensive rebounds per game the Huskies are allowing, which have led to 174 points (12.4 per game). In comparison, the Huskies have 147 offensive boards (10.5) in 14 games, which have led to 130 second-chance points (9.3 ppg).
HOPKINS AMONG BEST ...Junior
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) has taken the league by storm through the opening two months of the regular season. She ranks in the top ten in the PSAC in a number of categories, including points per game (second), rebounds per game (fifth), double-doubles (first), field goal percentage (tied for sixth), free throw percentage (seventh), blocks per game (tied for tenth), and steals per game (first). She is also 12th in the conference in assists per game (4.1) and is tied for 19th in the PSAC in minutes per game (32.1). She ranks 25th in the country in steals per game and 26th in the nation in points per game. She is also tied for 14th with eight double-doubles.
IMPRESSIVE CAREER ...Redshirt senior
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) is putting together a fine career in a Bloomsburg uniform. Chosen as a preseason All-PSAC East selection, Sadowski ranks second on the team in scoring (13.3 ppg), second on the team in rebounding (6.1 rpg), and tops in blocked shots (1.8 bpg). She leads the PSAC in field goal percentage at 62.1%, which is the fifth best mark in the country (not including Wednesday's results). She is also tied for the conference lead in blocks per game at 2.0. Sadowski now needs 39 points to join the 1,000-point club - Catherine Noack was the last player to score at least 1,000 points, joining the club during the 2013-14 campaign. The redshirt senior is also closing in on 500 career rebounds as she is 15 shy of reaching that milestone. Sadowski also has 147 career blocks in a Husky uniform - third on the program's all-time list.
REBOUNDING WOES ...Bloomsburg struggled mightily on the glass during the loss to Philadelphia on December 30. The Huskies were outrebounded by a 44-23 margin with
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) and
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) each pulling down a team-high five boards. Philadelphia had 20 offensive rebounds as opposed to Bloomsburg's four. The Rams' Tori Arnao nearly outrebounded the Huskies by herself - she finished with a game-high 21 boards.
Bloomsburg has now been outrebounded by an average of 3.9 boards per game - tied for 15th in the PSAC. The Huskies average 37.1 rebounds per game - 15th in the conference.
Over the last nine games, the Huskies have been outrebounded seven times - by a total of 74 boards - an average of 8.2 rebounds per contest. In four of the seven games, Bloomsburg has been outrebounded by at least ten. Meanwhile, over the first five games, Bloomsburg was not outrebounded once and averaged 4.0 more rebounds per game than its opponent.
NEW LOOK LINEUP ...Bloomsburg head coach
Bill Cleary decided to switch up the starting lineup against Slippery Rock on Sunday, Janaury 3, after a lackluster performance against Philadelphia University on Wednesday, December 30. The Huskies started five freshmen -
Julia Gantz (Havertown/Archbishop John Carroll),
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic),
Marissa Molnar (Erie/McDowell High School),
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley), and
Casey Warley (West Chester/Bayard Rustin) with all but Gantz and Mack making their first collegiate starts. The move paid off as Mack (20 points), Warley (eight points), and Sneidman (two points) each posting new career highs.
TURNOVERS COSTLY ...Bloomsburg struggled to hang on to the basketball against West Chester on Wednesday, December 16, and it proved to be costly for the Huskies. Bloomsburg turned the ball over 24 times which led to 38 West Chester points during the Huskies' 91-74 loss to the Golden Rams. Bloomsburg did everything else pretty well - it shot 50% from the field (27-of-54), shot 77.8% from the foul line (14-of-18), and outrebounded West Chester, 30-28. The difference was the points off turnovers - West Chester held the edge in that category, 38-9.
Over 14 games, the Huskies are averaging 18.4 turnovers per game (tied for 14th in PSAC), which have led to an average of 18.6 points off of turnovers for their opponents. Kutztown had 25 points off of 18 Bloomsburg turnovers on Saturday - 19 points off turnovers in the fourth quarter alone.
FIRST TIME IN A WHILE ...Junior
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) scored 13 points and pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds in the win over the University of the Sciences on November 29. The 16 rebounds marked the first time that a Bloomsburg player had at least 15 boards in a game since Colleen Kegerreis pulled down 15 in a 71-70 loss against Cheyney on Janaury 14, 2009. Hopkins recorded another 16-rebound effort against Mercyhurst on December 4.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE ...Bloomsburg will return to the friendly confines of Nelson Field House on Saturday, January 16, when the Huskies host the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven University. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. Bloomsburg will go back on the road on Wednesday, January 20, when it travels to Cheyney for a 5:30 p.m. start.
