Women’s Basketball Bounces Back For 66-55 Win Over Lock Haven Saturday

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Juniors Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) and Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) posted double-doubles and junior Kristie Costantino (Norristown/Archbishop John Carroll) scored a career-high 16 points as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team posted a 66-55 victory over visiting Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Field House. The Huskies improved to 10-6 overall and moved to 7-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Bald Eagles dropped to 7-10 overall and 4-9 in league play.

The Huskies have now won ten straight meetings between the two schools and have not lost to Lock Haven since dropping a 68-54 decision at Nelson Field House on December 19, 2007.

All told, five Bloomsburg players finished in double figures, led by Costantino's career-high 16. Junior Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) finished with 15 while Hopkins (12), Ross (11), and redshirt senior Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) (10) also reached double digits. The only other Husky to score on Saturday was freshman Alyssa Mack (Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) who had two points in ten minutes off the bench.

Costantino has now reached double figures three times in the last six games – she hadn't hit double digits in her first seven contests. She also finished with four assists, four rebounds, and three steals in a career-high 37 minutes.

Bloomsburg, again, took a little while to get going on Saturday. The Huskies did not get their first points until Ross nailed a jumper with 6:19 left in the first quarter to cut the Lock Haven lead to 4-2. Ross then drilled a triple to give the Huskies their first lead of the game before Lock Haven's Lysa Mealing converted a layup with 5:27 left in the first quarter as the visitors recaptured a one-point lead.

That, however, would be Lock Haven's final lead of the game. Bloomsburg rattled off the next ten points in the quarter to close the opening ten minutes with a 15-6 advantage. Ross finished with eight points in the period while Klunk came off the bench to chip in with five. Lock Haven, meanwhile, shot 2-of-16 in the first quarter – a sign of things to come for the Bald Eagles.

The Bald Eagles outscored the Huskies, 16-11, in the second quarter, but Bloomsburg held a four-point lead, 26-22, at the break. Klunk led all scorers in the first half with 11 points while Ross had nine points and six rebounds for the Huskies. Mackenzie Livingston led Lock Haven with eight first-half points.

Lock Haven cut the Bloomsburg lead to one, 28-27, after Livingston hit a layup with 8:32 left in the third quarter. But, Costantino hit her first of two triples on the afternoon to put the Huskies back up by four with 7:53 remaining. The Bald Eagles cut the lead to two on the following trip down the floor, but, again it was Costantino who put the hosts back up by two possessions after hitting a layup with 6:05 left in the third. Hopkins followed with a free throw and then a three-pointer to put Bloomsburg ahead by eight, 37-29, with 5:16 left.

Bloomsburg closed the third quarter with a 46-37 lead and then opened the fourth on a 9-1 run to take its biggest lead of the afternoon, 55-38, with 6:23 remaining. Lock Haven would cut the lead to as few as eight, but Costantino and company got the lead back up to 15 with 1:51 remaining. Lock Haven scored six of the game's final eight points for the final margin.

Hopkins posted her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Ross finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Sadowski, meanwhile, scored 10 points in only 10 minutes as she was plagued with foul trouble for much of the day. She is now 25 points shy of 1,000 for her career.

Livingston led Lock Haven with 17 points while Rachael McDaniel added 11 in defeat.

Lock Haven owned the glass on Saturday, outrebounding the Huskies, 53-39. The Bald Eagles pulled down 28 offensive rebounds, but only scored 21 second-chance points as they shot just 20-of-76 from the field (26.3%). Bloomsburg attempted 21 fewer shots, but went 25-of-55 (45.5%) including 15-of-29 in the second half as the Huskies pulled away.

Bloomsburg will travel to Cheyney on Wednesday, January 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
