BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - A late first-half goal proved to be the difference on Tuesday night as the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to 23rd-ranked Kutztown University at Steph Pettit Stadium. With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 5-6-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. The Golden Bears, meanwhile, improved to 10-3-0 overall and 9-3-0 in league play.
Kutztown started the match with an excellent scoring opportunity in the ninth minute off of a corner kick from Schyler Ackerman. Ackerman played the ball to the box where a header from Katie Miller went over the outstretched arms of Bloomsburg sophomore goalkeeper
Devon Haviland (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) but was headed out of harms' way by senior
Allie Camp (Beavertown, Pa./Midd-West) to keep the match scoreless.
Both teams would have some offensive chances over the next few minutes but Haviland and her Kutztown counterpart, Jenna Bracken, thwarted any scoring. However, the Golden Bears would cash in with 8:26 left in the first half when Cara Griffith received a centering feed off the foot of Emily Zwiercan from the left wing. Griffith one-timed the shot that beat Haviland along the ground and just inside the near post for her third goal of the season.
Bloomsburg outshot Kutztown, 7-6, in the opening half while the Golden Bears held a slim edge in corner kicks, 4-3.
Kutztown owned the play early in the second half as Haviland had to make a couple of big saves to keep the match a one-goal deficit. The Huskies turned on the jets in the closing minutes and had a golden opportunity when redshirt senior
Maureen Leis (Erdenheim, Pa./Springfield Township) got free and fired a shot that just went wide of the far post with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. The Golden Bears were able to run out the clock from there to hold on for the one-goal victory.
The Golden Bears held a 9-2 advantage in shots in the second half and finished the match outshooting the Huskies, 15-9. Kutztown added one more corner kick in the second half to win that category, 5-3.
Haviland tied a career-high, and posted a new season-best, with eight saves in the loss for the Huskies. She also had eight stops in last season's 3-1 loss to the Golden Bears. She fell to 5-6-2 on the season. Bracken, meanwhile, stopped two Bloomsburg shots to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Prior to the match, the Huskies honored their six seniors -
Allie Camp (Beavertown, Pa./Midd-West),
Megan Carroll (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area),
Olivia Falko (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua),
Jenna Fisher (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove),
Maureen Leis (Erdenheim, Pa./Springfield Township), and
Emily Potter (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run).
The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, October 15 when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown to take on the Lady Cats. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
