BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team put together one of its best performances of the season and earned a crucial 2-0 upset victory over the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday night at Steph Pettit Stadium. With the victory, the Huskies moved to 7-6-2 overall and 6-6-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. The Warriors, who entered the match ranked 13th in the country and fourth in the Atlantic Region, dropped to 11-3-1 overall and 11-2-1 in league play.
Bloomsburg moved into a tie with Mercyhurst for ninth place in the league standings and just one point behind IUP and Shippensburg which currently hold the final two playoff spots. The Huskies will visit IUP on Saturday afternoon in what could go a long way in determining postseason scenarios.
The match was extremely quiet for a majority of the first half until the Warriors had a couple of opportunities against sophomore goalkeeper
Devon Haviland (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood). The best chance for East Stroudsburg came with 8:45 left in the opening half when Amy Strauser got behind the Huskies' defense and fired a shot on goal that Haviland made a diving save on to keep the match scoreless.
Less than a minute later, freshman
Alexis Rostucher (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) entered the contest for the first time which turned out to pay immediate dividends for the Huskies. With just over four minutes left in the first half, a beautiful outlet pass by sophomore
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) found Rostucher behind the Warrior defense and one-on-one with East Stroudsburg goalkeeper, Jules Harris, in a race for the ball. Rostucher got there first, but Harris made an initial save on the freshman. However, the rebound squirted free and Rostucher was able to slide a shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Barber was credited with the assist - her team-leading fifth of the year.
East Stroudsburg held a slim 7-6 advantage in shots and was credited with all three corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
Nine minutes into the second half, the Huskies were able to extend their lead when a centering pass from the right wing corner by freshman
Megan Callan (Eldersburg, Md./Century) found sophomore
Jessica Supp (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) cutting down the middle of the field. Supp one-timed the shot past Harris for her team-leading fourth goal of the year and Bloomsburg found itself leading 2-0. It was Callan's second assist of the year.
Bloomsburg maintained a majority of the pressure in the second half and did not allow the Warriors to generate much in the way of scoring chances. In fact, Haviland did not need to make a save in the second half as the Huskies' defense swarmed East Stroudsburg all night and was able to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.
Haviland finished the night with four saves for her seventh shutout of the season. She improved to 7-6-2 on the season. Harris, who had allowed only six goals all season, was saddled with the loss as she dropped to 11-3-1 on the year. She finished with four saves.
Bloomsburg held a 9-4 shot advantage in the second half and finished the contest with a 15-11 edge in the category.
The Huskies will travel to IUP on Saturday, October 22, in a match that could determine playoff fates for both teams. Start time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
