SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The seventh-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team scored three goals in the final 7:41, including two from senior
Sam Peters (Harrisburg, Pa./Mifflin County) in the last 88 seconds, to rally from a 2-0 deficit and stun Slippery Rock University, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon at James Egli Field. The victory also clinched a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament which is set to get underway next Tuesday, November 1. The Huskies improved to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in league play while The Rock dropped to 6-11 overall and 3-6 in conference action.
Junior
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) started the comeback when she beat Slippery Rock goalkeeper Nicole Bream for her fifth goal of the season with 7:41 left in regulation. It was Mahan's first goal since scoring against Seton Hill in a 5-0 Huskies' victory on October 8. Senior
Laura Gerhard (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) picked up the assist when she centered a pass from the right side into the box. It was Gerhard's first point of the season.
Peters then took over.
The senior tied the game at 2-2 with 1:28 left when she knocked home her team-leading 11th goal of the season off of an assist from
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove). Less than a minute later, with 33 seconds left on the clock, Peters batted home her own rebound for her 12th goal of the year and to complete the stunning comeback. The senior has now scored at least one goal in the last six contests and in seven of the last eight games to take over the team lead in goals.
Peters is now second in the PSAC with 12 goals and is tied for third in the conference with 26 on the season - both career-highs. The game-winner was also her fourth of the season - second in the league.
Slippery Rock jumped out in front when Hannah Downing scored her third goal of the season with 1:54 left in the opening half. Just over nine minutes into the second half, The Rock extended their lead to 2-0 when Megan McKay beat Bloomsburg senior goalkeeper
Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin). Kailee Krupski assisted on both Slippery Rock goals.
Cassel improved to 12-5 on the season as she stopped three shots for the victory. Bream suffered the loss despite stopping six Huskies' shots. She dropped to 6-11 overall.
Bloomsburg outshot Slippery Rock, 13-8, for the contest and held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners on the afternoon.
The Huskies, fifth in the PSAC standings and fifth in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region rankings which were released on Wednesday afternoon, will look to improve both spots when they return home on Saturday, October 29, to play their final regular season game of the year against second-ranked Shippensburg. Start time from Steph Pettit Stadium is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
