MANSFIELD, Pa. - Senior
Jenna Fisher (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) scored her second goal of the season in the 103rd minute to lift the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team to a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Mansfield University on Wednesday night. The Huskies improved to 5-4-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, dropped to 2-7-1 overall and 2-7-0 in conference play.
Fisher was able to boot home a rebound past Mansfield goalkeeper Rachel Fox with 6:37 left in the second overtime after freshman
Megan Callan (Eldersburg, Md./Century) rang the initial shot off the crossbar. Callan was credited with her first collegiate assist while Fisher collected her second game-winning goal of the season and eighth of her career.
It was Bloomsburg's first overtime victory since knocking off Slippery Rock, 1-0, in double overtime on October 3, 2015. Since then, the Huskies had been 0-2-2 in their last four overtime contests.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore
Jessica Supp (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) gave the Huskies a 1-0 advantage in the 57th minute with her second goal of the season. Sophomore
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area), who was credited with the assist, sent an outlet pass ahead to Supp who got behind the Mountaineer defense and beat Fox on a breakaway for the first goal of the night.
Then, with time winding down and Bloomsburg just minutes away from a victory, the Mountaineers were able to knot the game at 1-1 when Emily Smith's header off of a corner kick got past sophomore goalkeeper
Devon Haviland (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) with 6:03 left in regulation. Caitlyn McNichol earned the assist.
Both teams had a couple of chances in the first overtime period with the Huskies outshooting the Mountaineers, 4-3. However, both goalkeepers were able to keep the other team off the scoreboard which set up Fisher's heroics early in the second overtime.
Mansfield held a 23-19 advantage in shots, which included a 14-8 edge in the second half. Neither team was able to generate many corner kicks with Mansfield holding a 2-1 edge in the department. The Mountaineers were able to make good on one of their two corner kick opportunities.
Haviland improved to 5-4-2 overall with six saves in the win for the Huskies. Fox suffered the loss in net for Mansfield despite turning aside nine Bloomsburg shot attempts.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, October 7 when they travel to Edinboro University for a 1:30 p.m. start time.
