Early Penalty Kick Goal Sinks Women's Soccer, 1-0, At Edinboro Friday

HTML BOX SCORE

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team gave Edinboro University everything it could handle on Friday afternoon but an early penalty kick goal by the Fighting Scots proved to be the difference as the Huskies dropped a 1-0 decision at Sox Harrison Stadium. The loss dropped to Huskies to 5-5-2 overall and 4-5-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. The Fighting Scots, meanwhile, improved to 10-2-0 overall and 9-2-0 in league play.

A foul by the Huskies inside the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Fighting Scots just 4:22 into the contest. Edinboro senior Alex Brown was able to beat Bloomsburg sophomore goalkeeper, Devon Haviland (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood), for her sixth goal of the season in, what proved to be, the only goal of the contest.

The match was close throughout as Edinboro held a slim, 10-7, advantage in shots and an even slimmer, 7-6, advantage in corner kicks.

Bloomsburg had a couple of golden opportunities to tie the match in the second half. A cross by senior Emily Potter (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) with 17 minutes to play resulted in a scrum for the ball right in front of the Edinboro goal. The ball got shuffled around and nearly rolled into the net, but it hit the left post, allowing Edinboro to clear the ball. Another near miss came in the final minute as Edinboro goalkeeper Sarah Baskey made a dive for a loose ball, but missed. Sophomore Jessica Supp (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) delivered an open shot from point-blank range, but Fighting Scot defender Katie Felitsky came to the rescue, sweeping the ball out of the box inches before it crossed the goal line.

Haviland stopped three shots in the loss for the Huskies while Baskey stopped two Bloomsburg shots to improve to 10-2-0 on the season. Haviland fell to 5-5-2 on the season.

Bloomsburg will return to action on Tuesday, October 11, when it returns to Steph Pettit Stadium to host Kutztown University in a conference matchup. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
