LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team outscored Georgian Court University, 44-12, in the second half on Saturday afternoon to earn a 61-41 victory over the Lions to give first-year head coach
Alison Tagliaferri her inaugural victory with the Huskies. With the win, Bloomsburg improved to 1-3 on the young season while Georgian Court dropped to 2-4 on the year.
Senior
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) led the Huskies with her first double-double of the season as she recorded 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. She also added four assists, two blocks, and a pair of steals. Sophomore
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) added 17 points while senior
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) finished with 11Â in the win.
Things looked gloomy at the outset for the Huskies as Bloomsburg connected on only 2-of-15 shots in the opening quarter and fell behind, 19-4. Conversely, the Lions got off to a fast start in the opening ten minutes as they made good on 9-of-16 field goal attempts.
The Huskies began to chip away at the lead as Bloomsburg outscored the Lions, 13-10, but still trailed by twelve, 29-17, as the teams headed to their respective locker rooms at halftime.
It took a while for either team to get going in the third quarter but, when the dust settled, the Huskies had turned a 12-point halftime deficit into a seven-point lead heading to the fourth quarter thanks to a 23-4 point advantage in the third period.
Klunk scored the first points of the quarter on a pair of free throws with 8:20 left in the third to cut the Lions' lead to 29-19. After a Klunk layup, Georgian Court regained its ten-point lead, 31-21, on a basket from Alba Herrero-Gomez with 7:49 remaining. Klunk, who scored the Huskies' first ten points of the quarter, followed with a three-point play to cut the lead to 31-24 with 7:33 left. Georgian Court's Alliyah Berger hit a jumper with 7:07 left before Klunk made good on another three-point play to pull the Huskies to within 33-27Â with under six minutes left in the third.
Sophomore
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) scored the first three points of her career, nailing a triple from the right wing, and Klunk knocked down back-to-back shots to put the Huskies ahead, 34-33, with 2:47 left in the third quarter. Mack and sophomore
Casey Warley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) hit layups and freshman
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) closed out the quarter with a pair of free throws to give Bloomsburg a 40-33 advantage heading to the fourth.
Georgian Court's Destiny Thompson cut the lead to five at the outset of the final quarter before Mack nailed a three-pointer and converted a layup to give the Huskies a ten-point lead and the team never looked back from that point. Bloomsburg went on to outscore Georgian Court, 16-6, over the last 8:13 to pull away for the 20-point win.
The Huskies went 15-of-27 (55.6%)Â from the floor in the second half to finish the game shooting 39.7%. The Lions, meanwhile, were held to just 4-of-23 (17.4%) shooting in the second half.
Klunk's 20 points and 12 rebounds both were one shy of her career-highs in both categories. She scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against Kutztown on February 10, 2016.
Thompson led Georgian Court with 14 points and was the only Lion to reach double figures.
Bloomsburg will look to make it two straight when it travels to Philadelphia University on Sunday afternoon. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
