Women's Basketball Scores Season-High But Falls At West Chester, 81-67

HTML BOX SCORE

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team scored a season-high 67 points on Friday evening but it wasn't enough as the Huskies dropped their sixth consecutive game with an 81-67 setback at West Chester. Bloomsburg fell to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings while the Golden Rams improved to 3-7 overall and 3-3 in league play.

Senior Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) paced the Huskies with 16 points while also adding five assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Sophomore Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) added 12 points while sophomore Casey Warley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) posted career-highs in both points (11) and rebounds (8).

A slow start by the Huskies proved to be the difference on Friday evening. West Chester jumped out to a 22-12 lead after the opening quarter as the Huskies made only 5-of-14 from the field and turned the ball over eight times in the opening ten minutes.

But, Bloomsburg settled down and kept things in reach the rest of the way. The Huskies cut the lead to 26-20 with 7:58 left in the second quarter as they scored eight of the first twelve points of the quarter. But, the Golden Rams went on a 6-0 run over the next 60 seconds to extend the lead to 32-20 with 6:55 left in the first half. The teams exchanged points the rest of the quarter and West Chester took a 42-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Huskies started hot at the outset of the third quarter as they went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 42-36 with 7:30 left. Klunk hit back-to-back baskets, followed by a Mack three-pointer, to get Bloomsburg back in the game. But, West Chester scored ten of the next twelve points to extend the lead to 52-38 with 5:02 left in the third. The Huskies kept fighting and got the lead down to eight, 56-48, with eight seconds left in the quarter before West Chester's Tori Smick hit three free-throws with no time left on the clock to build the lead back up to eleven, 59-48, after three.

That eleven-point lead proved to be too much to overcome as the Huskies could never get closer than eight points throughout the fourth quarter.

The Huskies shot 27-of-57 (47.4%) from the field and made 6-of-17 (35.3%) from long range as part of their season-high 67 points. However, Bloomsburg made only 7-of-14 from the free throw line. Points from the charity stripe proved to be the difference as West Chester made 29-of-39 from the foul line. Smick, alone, was 18-of-22 from the free throw line for the Golden Rams - a majority of her game-high 24 points.

Klunk, Mack, and Warley were the Huskies to finish in double figures while senior Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) chipped in with eight points. Alexis Anderson (13) and Madison Torresin (12) also finished in double digits for the Golden Rams. Torresin also added a game-high 11 rebounds.

Bloomsburg will look to snap the losing streak and pick up its first conference win of the season when it returns home to host Cheyney University on Tuesday, January 3. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from the Nelson Field House.
