Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) scored the game-winning basket with nine seconds remaining to give the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team a 61-60 come-from-behind win over Kutztown University (8-14, 5-13 PSAC East) on Wednesday in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division matchup. The win clinched a berth for the Huskies (13-9, 10-8 PSAC East) in the upcoming PSAC playoffs.
Â
Trailing 60-54 with 2:04 left to play after a bucket by Kutztown's Kelsey Watson, the Huskies came down and missed a 3-pointer with the Golden Bears rebounding. After two deep misses by Kutztown, the Huskies
Kristie Costantino (Norristown/Archbishop John Carroll) buried her own 3-pointer to make it a 60-57 game with 1:15 to play.
Â
After each team misfired on shots, Kutztown's Natalya Lee turned the ball over with 28 seconds to play. After moving the ball around the perimeter,
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) started to drive to the basket where Watson was called for an intentional foul giving Klunk two free throws and Bloomsburg the ball. Klunk drained both free throws to make it 60-59 with 25 seconds to go. Out of the timeout, Bloomsburg again moved the ball around before Sadowski was spotted inside. The senior missed on her first attempt, but got the put back to go to give the Huskies a 61-60 lead.
Â
Out of the timeout Watson was off the mark for the Golden Bears with the clock expiring before another shot was taken.
Â
It appeared early on that game would not be close as the Huskies used solid shooting in the first quarter hitting on eight of 12 from the floor and getting out to a 20-13 lead after 10 minutes. Klunk was on fire from the beginning hitting 4-4 from the field and 2-2 from the foul line for 11 points. Defensively, the Huskies held the Golden Bears to just 23 percent shooting for the period (4-17).
Â
Bloomsburg opened its lead to 12 points on two occasions in the second period, the last coming on a jumper by
Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) that made the score 27-15 with 6:50 to play before halftime. But the Golden Bears rallied and held the Huskies scoreless for the rest of half while going on a 14-0 run to take a 29-27 lead at the break.
Â
The teams traded leads four times in the third period along with being tied twice. Kutztown led by as many as four points in the period with the Huskies briefly holding a three-point advantage after a jumper by Klunk make it 41-38 with 2:37 to play.
Â
In the fourth period a Ross lay-in gave the Huskie a 46-45 edge with 8:52 to play. That would be its last lead till under 10 seconds to go. Watson came back and put the Golden Bears on top, 47-46. Later back-to-back buckets by Watson put the visitors up six points, 54-48, with 5:03 remaining.
Â
Klunk narrowed the gap back to four points, 58-54, before Watson's basket with 2:03 left set up the wild closing two minutes.
Â
The 21 points for Klunk tied a career-high, while the 13 rebounds were a new career-best for the junior. Sadowski, the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week, finished the night with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Ross chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
