StatisticsLAST TIME OUT ...Bloomsburg dropped a 78-65 decision to West Chester at Nelson Field House - its second straight loss. The Huskies fell behind, 36-22, at halftime but were able to cut the lead to as few as three points at the outset of the fourth quarter. However, the Golden Rams went on a 7-0 run at that point to take a ten-point lead with 7:43 left and were able to hold off the Husky rally attempt. Both
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) (16 points, 11 rebounds) and
Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) (12 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles for the Huskies in the loss.
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points. Bloomsburg tied a season-high with 27 turnovers which led to 25 West Chester points. The Huskies also received only 12 points from their bench - eight from freshman
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic). Bloomsburg shot 44.9% from the field but made only 4-of-15 from three-point range. West Chester had five players finish in double figures led by Kendall Benovy and Dallas Ely who each had 15.
DOUBLE DIGITS AGAIN ...The victory over Lock Haven on January 16 was Bloomsburg's tenth win of the season - the eighth straight season that the Huskies have won at least ten games. The last time Bloomsburg did not win ten games was in 2007-08 when it went 8-19 under head coach Tammy Millsaps. Current head coach
Bill Cleary took over in 2008-09 and has won at least ten games every season.
THE MANSFIELD SERIES ...Bloomsburg leads the all-time series against Mansfield, 59-10. The Huskies have won each of the last 16 contests between the two schools as the Mountaineers have not defeated Bloomsburg since February 4, 2009 - a 52-46 decision at Decker Gymnasium. Over the last ten meetings, Bloomsburg is averaging 79.7 points per game on offense and allowing only 56.8 points per game to Mansfield on defense. Â
LAST MEETING AGAINST MANSFIELD ...Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) and
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) combined to score 46 points and ten players scored at least one point as the Huskies won big over Mansfield, 87-51, at Nelson Field House. Sadowski finished with a team-high 24 points on 12-of-16 from the field while also adding six rebounds and six blocks - one shy of her career-high. Hopkins ended with 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting while leading the team with nine rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Bloomsburg outscored Mansfield in every quarter and extended its winning streak to 16 against the Mountaineers in the all-time series. The Huskies shot 52.9% from the field and made a season-high nine three-pointers, shooting 9-of-21 from long range, in the victory.
Â
SCOUTING MANSFIELD ...The Mountaineers enter Saturday's tilt with a 4-15 overall record and a 2-14 mark in the PSAC Eastern Division. Mansfield has lost two straight since defeating Cheyney, 69-55, in Mansfield on January 27. Prior to its victory over the Wolves, Mansfield had lost 11 straight games after starting the season with a 3-3 record. The Mountaineers most recently played on Wednesday night and suffered an 85-66 loss at Shippensburg. As a team, Mansfield is averaging 62.7 points per game on offense and is allowing 74.2 points per game - last in the PSAC. Katie Fitzpatrick leads the Mountaineers in nearly every statistical category. She averages 15.9 points per game and 7.5 rebounds while contributing 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals - all tops on the team. She also shoots a team-high 49.6% from the field and is tied for the team lead in free-throw percentage at 75.0%. Brielle Kelly is the only other Mountaineer in double figures, averaging 13.2 points per contest. Mansfield is not much of a threat from long distance as it shoots only 27.5% from downtown - 17th in the PSAC. The Mountaineers have made only 75 three-pointers in 19 games with Becky Evans leading the team with 22 makes.
STREAK SNAPPED ...Bloomsburg saw its modest three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, January 30, at East Stroudsburg, 71-66. The Huskies also had their 14-game winning streak against the Warriors snapped in the process. It was East Stroudsburg's first win over Bloomsburg since February 11, 2009 - a 70-58 decision at Nelson Field House.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE ...The loss against West Chester on February 3, marked the third time this season that multiple players recorded a double-double. Sadowski (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Ross (12 points, 10 rebounds) turned the trick against the Golden Rams. Hopkins (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Ross (11 points, 10 rebounds) achieved the feat against Lock Haven on January 16 while three Huskies posted double-doubles - Hopkins, Klunk, and Sadowski - against Mercyhurst on December 4.
Meanwhile, the Huskies have also had three games where five players reached double figures in scoring. The latest occurrence came on January 16 when the Huskies defeated Lock Haven.
Kristie Costantino (Norristown/Archbishop John Carroll) led the way with 16 while
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) (15),
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) (12),
Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) (11), and
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) (10) also hit the mark. The Huskies also accomplished the feat against Gannon on December 5 and at Goldey-Beacom on November 17.
LEAVING A MARK ON THE PROGRAM ...Redshirt senior
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) became the 21st player (5th under head coach
Bill Cleary) in program history to record 1,000 career points when she hit a bucket with 27 seconds left in the third quarter at Cheyney on January 20. She finished the game with 27 points, which moved her to 1,002 for her career. She had an ever-better performance against Shippensburg, posting a school-record 43 points on 18-of-23 from the field and 7-of-7 from the foul line. Sadowski is just 18 points shy of cracking the top 20 in program history and, with her eight rebounds on Wednesday, January 27, against Shippensburg, she became the 14th player in school history to have 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. In the process, Sadowski also became one of only two players in school history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 150 blocks. Colleen Kegerreis (2005-09) finished her career with 1,313 points, 859 rebounds, and 194 blocks.
MORE ON THE RECORD ...Sadowski's 43 points broke the previous school record of 39 which was set by Bloomsburg Hall-of-Famer, Theresa Lorenzi, who accomplished the feat on February 13, 1988 in a 115-102 Husky victory at Cheyney. The 43 points tied for the 11th highest single game total in PSAC history and were just five shy of tying the PSAC record of 48 points set by Millersville's Terri Gunder during the 1970-71 season. The 18 field goals were also a program record, eclipsing the previous record of 17 set by Lorenzi on two different occasions (12/10/86 and 1/31/87).
FIRST TIME IN A WHILE ...Junior
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) registered a career-high 10 assists in the victory over Shippensburg on January 27. It marked the first time a Bloomsburg player had 10-or-more assists in a game since Dana Wieller had 11 helpers in an 86-65 win over Philadelphia on December 30, 2012. Prior to that, junior
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) scored 13 points and pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds in the win over the University of the Sciences on November 29. The 16 rebounds marked the first time that a Bloomsburg player had at least 15 boards in a game since Colleen Kegerreis pulled down 15 in a 71-70 loss against Cheyney on Janaury 14, 2009. Hopkins recorded another 16-rebound effort against Mercyhurst on December 4.
MACK IS BACK ...For the fourth time this season, freshman
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday, January 25. She earned the honor after posting 12 points in Bloomsburg's 88-68 win at Cheyney on Wednesday, Janaury 20. Her 12 points snapped a string of four straight quiet outings since recording a career-high 20 points in the win over Slippery Rock on January 3. Prior to the victory at Cheyney, Mack had averaged 3.5 points, 0.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists over her previous four games, but had 12 points on 4-of-8 from the field, 2-of-3 from long range, and 2-of-2 at the foul line. She also added two rebounds and a career-high four assists in the win over Cheyney. Over her last four games, Mack is averaging 8.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists.
COSTANTINO HEATING UP ...Junior
Kristie Costantino (Norristown/Archbishop John Carroll) has emerged as the point guard for the Huskies going forward, as she has started seven of the last nine games and has proven to be an excellent handler of the Bloomsburg offense. Over the last ten games, dating back to December 30, Costantino is averaging 6.0 points and 3.4 assists and has all three of her double-digit scoring efforts during the span. Over her first seven games (she missed three due to an injury), Costantino averaged just 3.1 points and 2.4 assists.
COMING OUT PARTY ...After scoring 25 total points (1.1 per game) and pulling down 33 total rebounds (1.4) over her first two seasons combined, junior
Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) is taking advantage of a significant increase in playing time this season. She is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game, third in rebounding at 5.3 boards per contest, fourth in assists per game (2.4), and third in blocks per game (0.8). She has three double-doubles this season with her latest coming against West Chester on February 3 (12 points, 10 rebounds). Her second came against Lock Haven on January 16 (11 points, 10 rebounds) while her first double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) was registered in the loss to Gannon on December 5. In the win over Kutztown on January 9, Ross poured in a career-high 22 points, marking the first time in her collegiate career that she had eclipsed 20 points in a game. Her previous high was 18 against the University of the Sciences on November 29.
SHARP SHOOTERS ...Bloomsburg enters Saturday's contest ranked second in the PSAC in shooting percentage (44.4%) and second in the league in free throw percentage (74.2%). The Huskies have two of the top three shooters from the field in the conference -
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) (1st - 62.3%) and
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) (3rd - 52.1%) while Hopkins also ranks eighth in the league in free throw shooting (80.6%). The Huskies have shot better than 50% from the field seven times this season and are 5-2 in those games.
MOLNAR HITS DOUBLE DIGITS ...Freshman
Marissa Molnar (Erie/McDowell High School) scored 11 points in the win at Cheyney on January 20 - the first time in her collegiate career that she hit double digits. She was 1-of-1 from the field (a three-pointer near the end of the first half) and was 8-of-8 at the foul line. Molnar became the eighth different player to record a double-digit scoring game this season.
DOESN'T HAPPEN OFTEN ...Bloomsburg's 72-41 loss at Millersville on Wednesday, January 13, was the program's worst loss since dropping an 80-44 decision at Shippensburg on January 27, 2010. The 41 points scored by the Huskies were the fewest scored by a Bloomsburg team since suffering a 54-38 loss at home against Clarion on January 11, 2009.
REBOUNDING WOES ...Bloomsburg has now been outrebounded by an average of 4.2 boards per game - 16th out of 18 teams in the PSAC. The Huskies average 36.7 rebounds per game - 16th in the conference. Over the last 15 games, the Huskies have been outrebounded on 11 occasions by a total of 104 boards - an average of 6.9 rebounds per contest. In six of the eleven games, Bloomsburg has been outrebounded by at least ten. Meanwhile, over the first five games, Bloomsburg was not outrebounded and averaged 4.0 more rebounds per game than its opponent. The Huskies showed signs of improvement prior to the loss at East Stroudsburg. Bloomsburg held a 40-38 rebounding edge over Shippensburg on January 27 and outrebounded Cheyney, 38-27, on January 20 - the first time Bloomsburg outrebounded its opponent since edging Mansfield, 41-39, on December 19. It was only the third time this season that Bloomsburg has had back-to-back games of outrebounding its opponent.
SECOND CHANCES ...The Huskies have allowed 327 offensive rebounds to their opponents during the season. That figure equates to an average of 16.4 offensive rebounds per game that the Huskies are allowing, which has led to 251 points (12.6 per game). In comparison, the Huskies have 210 offensive boards (10.5) which has led to 194 second-chance points (9.7 ppg).
NEW LOOK LINEUP ...Head coach
Bill Cleary decided to switch up the starting lineup against Slippery Rock on Sunday, Janaury 3. The Huskies started five freshmen -
Julia Gantz (Havertown/Archbishop John Carroll),
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic),
Marissa Molnar (Erie/McDowell High School),
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley), and
Casey Warley (West Chester/Bayard Rustin) with all but Gantz and Mack making their first collegiate starts. The move paid off as Mack (20), Warley (8), and Sneidman (2) each posted new career highs in points. Cleary continued to tweak the lineup as freshman
Madeline Murtin (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) made her first collegiate start on January 16 against Lock Haven while Gantz was inserted back into the starting lineup. He changed it again against Cheyney, replacing Murtin with Klunk in the starting five. He has gone with the same starters in each of the last four games - Sadowski, Gantz, Ross, Klunk, and Costantino.
DID YOU KNOW ...Bloomsburg's loss at Edinboro on Wednesday, January 6, was the first loss by a Huskies' team in the month of January since a 65-59 loss to West Chester on January 26, 2013. Since that loss, Bloomsburg had rattled off 21 straight victories in January. The Huskies lost three times in January - the most since losing four times during the 2010-11 season.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE ...Bloomsburg will return home on Wednesday, February 10 to host Kutztown at the Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Huskies earned a 76-70 victory at Kutztown on January 9.
