Game 2 Box ScoreEAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of 15th-ranked East Stroudsburg University on Friday afternoon at Mitterling Field. The doubleheader loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Huskies. Bloomsburg dropped a 15-5 decision in the opener before suffering a 5-4, nine-inning, setback in the nightcap to fall to 10-7 overall and 0-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Warriors improved to 17-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the opener before East Stroudsburg used two six-run innings to break the game open.
Sophomore
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township), who went 4-for-4 in game one, led off the contest with a double and advanced to third on a bunt single from redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East). Benson gave the Huskies a 1-0 advantage on an atempted double steal during which Edgette was gunned down trying to swipe second.
In the third, Benson and Edgette started another Bloomsburg rally with back-to-back singles. Junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) plated Benson on an RBI groundout and, one batter later, senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) added another run with an RBI single that scored Edgette.
But, the Warriors finally solved sophomore
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional), touching up the righthander for six runs on eight hits in the bottom of the third to take a 6-3 advantage. Drew Hercik had the big hit of the frame with a two-run single. Hercik gave the hosts a 7-3 lead with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the fourth.
East Stroudsburg scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth against senior reliever
Sean McCloskey (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) before scoring six more times in the bottom of the sixth against two Bloomsburg freshmen -
Logan Zavada (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and
Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) - to extend the lead to 15-3.
Bloomsburg scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh for the final margin. Sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) scored on a passed ball and Kirman followed with a sacrifice fly to account for the Huskies' runs.
Benson had four of Bloomsburg's nine hits while Edgette chipped in with a pair. Kirman added to his team-lead with a pair of runs batted in to give him 24 for the season.
In the nightcap, the Huskies fell behind 4-0 before forcing extra innings with four runs in the final two innings.
Redshirt sophomore
Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County) got the ball in game two and allowed three runs in the second and another in the fourth as the Warriors jumped in front, 4-0. Meyer went seven innings and allowed nine hits but only one of the runs was earned. He walked two and struck out five.
Bloomsburg cut the lead to 4-2 with two runs in the top of the sixth. The Huskies loaded the bases on a hit batter, a bunt single from Woelfel, and a walk, with nobody out against East Stroudsburg starter Tyler Eckman. Edgette followed with a two-run single to get the visitors on the board before Eckman got out of the jam without any further damage.
In the seventh, freshman
Tristan Kevitch (Ardmore, Pa./Harriton) pulled the Huskies to within a run with a one-out solo home run - his first collegiate round tripper. Freshman
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South), who singled in the following at bat, came around to score on a pair of East Stroudsburg errors to tie the contest at 4-4.
Bloomsburg got a pair of runners on in the top eighth inning on back-to-back walks to Edgette and Muth, but the duo was left stranded. In the bottom of the ninth, freshman
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), in his second inning of work, walked a pair to start the frame. Then, after a groundout, Hercik sent the East Stroudsburg crowd home happy with a walk-off sacrifice fly.
Kevitch and Shiffer each had two of Bloomsburg's six hits in game two.
The two teams will meet on Saturday afternoon, March 19, at Danny Litwhiler Field in the home opener for the Huskies. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
