GAME TWO BOXBLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team opened PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Central Division play on Thursday by sweeping a pair of games from Clarion University by scores of 4-1 and 9-0 in a game called after five innings by the mercy rule.
Â
In game one Bloomsburg got all the runs it would need in the first without benefit of a hit.
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) reached on an error leading off the bottom of the first then went on to steal second. After an out,
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) was hit by a pitch putting runners at first and second. Both runners then moved up on a ground out. A pitch from Clarion's Rachel Hoffman then got by the catcher and went all the way to the backstop allowing both Winkelman and Parker to score.
Â
In the third inning the Huskies made it 3-0 when
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) singled, took third on Parker's double and scored on
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia)'s sacrifice fly to center.
Â
Clarion got one run back in the fifth on an RBI double by Sarah Gossard. But Bloomsburg answered in the bottom of the fifth with a run. After Mayhew singled,
Abbey Remley (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) ran for her. Remley took second on a single by Tomaschik and moved to third on a passed ball. She then scored on a single by
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown).
Â
Tomaschik finished strong in the circle retiring the final seven hitters she faced, including a swinging strikeout to end the game. For the game she allowed just four hits, did not issue a walk and fanned nine.
Â
Mayhew led the hitters going 2-4 with a run scored.
Â
In the nightcap the Huskies took the early lead in the game using the long ball. After two were out Parker drilled a long home run to left field making it 1-0. Tomaschik then followed with a rocket over the centerfield fence that banged off the scoreboard for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Meanwhile
Sarah Bortner (Glenville, Pa./South Western) was keeping the Golden Eagles off the board getting the first six outs by strikeout.
Â
Bloomsburg broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring seven times on five hits and taking advantage of one key error. After an out to open the inning
Erica Keen (Gordonville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) walked and then scored on an RBI triple by
Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore).
Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) then doubled home Peacock.
Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) reached on an error by the first baseman who was off the bag on what could have been a double play ground ball. That allowed the inning to continue with Mayhew driving in two with a double and Tomaschik delivering a two-run double.
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) closed out the Huskies scoring with an RBI single.
Â
Sarah Bortner (Glenville, Pa./South Western) got the win by going the first four innings and allowed just one hit. She also fanned 10 and walked three. Tomaschik went 2-3 with three RBI, while McElroy was 2-2 with an RBI.
