Game 2 Box ScoreMANSFIELD, Pa. - Senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) belted two home runs and drove in seven in game one, helping the Bloomsburg University baseball team to a doubleheader split at Mansfield University on Friday afternoon at Shaute Field. Bloomsburg took game one by a 9-1 final, but dropped the nightcap, 8-2. The Huskies moved to 12-10 overall and 1-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Mountaineers moved to 9-11 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Casselberry got the Huskies going in the opener, drilling a grand slam home run over the center field fence in the top of the first inning for an early 4-0 advantage. Sophomore
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) and junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) were both hit by a pitch and senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) preceded Casselberry's round tripper with a single to load the bases.
It was Casselberry's second home run of the season.
That proved to be all the run support that sophomore
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) would need as the righthander pitched a complete-game gem to improve to 3-2 on the season. Warren allowed only four hits and did not walk a batter while striking out nine. He allowed only an unearned run in the bottom half of the second inning and recorded 17 of the 21 outs via either strikeout or groundout.
Bloomsburg took a 6-1 lead in the top of the third when Kirman and Casselberry had back-to-back RBI singles.
In the top of the fourth, sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) belted his second home run in as many games, sending an offering over the right center field fence for a 7-1 lead. Casselberry finished off the scoring, and the Mountaineers, with his second home run of the game - a two-run shot to center in the top of the fifth inning.
Casselberry went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a career-high seven runs batted in. It also marked the first time in his collegiate career that he homered more than once in a game.
Kirman and redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) contributed two hits apiece. Muth and Edgette joined Casselberry with two runs scored.
Redshirt sophomore
Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County) was given the ball in game two and was greeted rudely by a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning as the Mountaineers took a 2-0 advantage.
Mansfield scored two more in the bottom of the fourth, one unearned, to take a 4-0 lead. After the Mountaineers plated another run in the bottom of the fifth, Muth broke up Chase Pepper's shutout bid with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to cut the Mansfield lead to 5-2. It was Muth's fourth home run of the season - second only to Kirman's 11.
But, the Mountaineers put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Meyer and freshman relieverÂ
Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area), who recorded the final two outs of the inning, one of which was a sacrifice fly.
Meyer dropped to 1-2 on the season and allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits in 5.1 innings. He walked two and struck out three.
Offensively, the Huskies were held to just four hits against Pepper, who improved to 3-2 for the Mountaineers. Edgette, Muth, Kirman, and Casselberry were the only Bloomsburg players with hits in game two.
Bloomsburg and Mansfield will meet again on Saturday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
