Game 2 Box ScoreBLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team scored 31 runs and had 25 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Mansfield University on Saturday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field. The Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post an 8-6 victory in game one and then scored the most runs by a Bloomsburg team in nearly three years as they completed the sweep with a 23-2 victory in the nightcap. With the victories, Bloomsburg improved to 14-10 overall and 3-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Mountaineers fell to 9-13 overall and 1-7 in league play.
The 23 runs in game two were the most since defeating Clarion by a 30-2 final in game one of a doubleheader on April 28, 2013. Meanwhile, the 21-run margin of victory was also the most since the 28-run victory over the Golden Eagles. It marked the second time this season that the Huskies have posted at least 20 runs in a game - the Huskies defeated Kutztown, 20-1, on February 27.
Bloomsburg now has 14 victories this season which equals the total number of wins the Huskies had all of last season (14-22).
Mansfield scored a run on three hits in the top of the first inning of game one against Bloomsburg's senior righthander,
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport). But, in the bottom of the first inning, the Huskies responded with four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) plated the first run with an RBI single to knot the contest at 1-1. Junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) followed with a mammoth home run to left field - a three-run shot - to finish off the scoring in the first.
It was Muth's fifth home run of the season.
In the bottom of the third, Bloomsburg added a pair of runs to take a 6-1 lead courtesy of a two-run single up the middle from senior
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI).
But, the Mountaineers began to chip away against Carpenter. In the top of the fourth, Peter Pena plated a run with an RBI single to left to cut the Huskies' lead to 6-2. Then, in the fifth, Mansfield tied the game at 6-6 with four runs and ended Carpenter's afternoon. Zephan Kash had an RBI single to make it 6-3 and, two batters later, Tanner Klein had a two-run single to cut the margin to 6-5. Sophomore
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) relieved Carpenter and promptly served up a game-tying RBI double to Owen Lukens before getting out of further damage.
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) snapped the 6-6 tie with a single to right center to drive home Benson with the eventual game-winning run. Freshman
Tristan Kevitch (Ardmore, Pa./Harriton) added an insurance run later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Casselberry.
Newmyer pitched around a leadoff single in the seventh to preserve the victory. Newmyer got the win after allowing two hits in 2.1 innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out three to improve to 3-2 on the season. Brandon Garrett allowed eight runs on ten hits to suffer the loss for Mansfield. He fell to 0-2 on the year.
Bloomsburg had 11 hits in game one, two each from redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), Casselberry, and Kirman. Casselberry also scored three runs to lead the team in that department.
In the nightcap, Bloomsburg scored at least one run in every inning en route to the lopsided victory. Redshirt junior
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was the beneficiary of the offense as he picked up his first win of the season (1-3). He went the distance and had a one-hit shutout going to the seventh before the Mountaineers broke through with a pair of runs. Amaike finished by allowing two runs on four hits, one walk, and nine strikeouts.
The Huskies, meanwhile, scored 23 runs on only 14 hits. However, Bloomsburg batters were walked seven times, were hit by a pitch six times, and were aided by six Mansfield errors which led to nine unearned runs.
Bloomsburg got started with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first against Mansfield starter, Luke Hils. Benson drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a double by Edgette. Benson scored on a wild pitch to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead and Casselberry followed with an RBI groundout to second for the other Bloomsburg run.
The Huskies added two more runs in the second on an RBI groundout from sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) and a passed ball which platd freshman
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South).
Three more runs crossed the dish in the third inning as the Huskies took a 7-0 advantage. Alec Covel relieved Hils after just two innings and promptly hit Casselberry and Kirman on his first two pitches of the contest. Kevitch followed with a single to load the bases with one out. After Covel retired Shiffer on a popout, a harmless groundball to first off the bat of Almand was misplayed by Mansfield first baseman, Zephan Kash, allowing two runs to score. The Huskies' third run of the frame scored on a well-executed double steal attempt with Kevitch scoring before Almand was tagged out.
Bloomsburg blew the game open with five runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single from Casselberry and a three-run home run by Kevitch - his second round tripper of the season.
Edgette had an RBI double in the fifth to extend the Bloomsburg lead to 13-0. Then, the Huskies scored ten runs in the sixth to take a 23-0 lead. Freshman
TJ Backer (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) had an RBI single for the first run followed by a three-run-double by Benson. Kirman was plunked with the bases loaded to drive home a run followed by a bases-loaded walk to redshirt sophomore
Cy Treaster (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County). Redshirt freshman
Alex Castro (Paramus, N.J./Paramus ) drove home his first run of the season with a sacrifice fly to left and more damage ensued courtesy of RBI singles from Benson and Edgette. The other run scored on a dropped fly ball that would have ended the inning.
All told, the Huskies sent 16 batters to the plate in the sixth, and scored ten runs on six hits, two errors, three hit batsmen, and two walks. Four of the runs were unearned.
Edgette went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Kevitch went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three runs driven in while Benson was 2-for-3 with three walks, three runs scored, and four runs batted in. Casselberry also drove in three runs in the victory.
The Huskies will look to stay hot on Friday, April 1, and Saturday, April 2, when they play a four-game, home-and-home series against Lock Haven University. Friday's contest will be in Lock Haven beginning at 1:00 p.m. while Saturday's twinbill will take place at Danny Litwhiler Field - also at 1:00 p.m.
