GAME TWO BOXBLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team ran its winning streak to nine games with a sweep of Holy Family University on Monday by scores of 6-2 and 7-2 at
Jan Hutchinson Field. The games were played on a persistently windy day with several short stoppages to wait for the dust to settle.
Â
In game one the Huskies used the long ball and the right arm of
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) to get the win. Bloomsburg opened the scoring with
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) smashing a line drive shot over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead. The Huskies added to the margin in the second inning.
Â
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) walked to lead off the bottom of the second with
Erica Keen (Gordonville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) following with a long home run to right center to make it 3-0. After a pitching change,
Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) singled, but was erased on
Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat)' fielder's choice. Carcasses then moved up on a passed ball and took third on
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield)'s single. Mayhew worked a walk to load the bases.
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) then singled to right scoring Carcasses.
Â
The Tigers cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth aided by the wind. With runners at second and third Holy Family's Koreen Orozco popped a ball to left field that the wind grabbed a hold of and pushed away from Winkelman. The ball eventually dropped in in left center field with both runners scoring.
Â
Bloomsburg got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Winkelman reached base on a single and scored when Mayhew singled, but the ball was thrown past the first baseman and ended up down the right field line. The Huskies got their final run in the fifth when Tomaschik led off with a solo homer.
Â
Tomaschik got the win in the circle, her seventh against no losses, and finished with five K's and no walks.
Â
In game two the Huskies banged out 13 hits and took advantage of three errors to win, 7-2. Bloomsburg jumped out early to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Winkelman doubled to lead off and took third on a wild pitch. On the throw down to third to try and get the out, the ball sailed into left field allowing the freshman to score. Mayhew then doubled with Parker following with a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead.
Â
Holy Family got a run back in the second and one back in the fifth to make it 3-2. Bloomsburg got some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth scoring four times on six hits and taking advantage of two errors.
Marissa Shelhamer (Nescopeck, Pa./Central Columbia) had an RBI double with Wheeland driving in a run with a single. Winkelman also got a wind blown RBI triple with Mayhew driving in the final run with a single.
Â
Sarah Bortner (Glenville, Pa./South Western) was effective in the circle going the distance for the win. She struck out 10 and walked three while giving up six hits and no earned runs.
Â
Mayhew, who hit .600 last week, is off to another strong start this week going a combined 5-7 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Â
The Huskies are now 23-4 on the year and will visit Mansfield on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Holy Family falls to 8-12 with the losses.
