Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) and
Sarah Bortner (Glenville, Pa./South Western) combined to allow only four hits on Friday afternoon as the Bloomsburg University softball team extended its winning streak to eleven straight with 5-1 and 6-1 victories at Mansfield University. The Huskies improved to 25-4 overall and 6-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division while the Mountaineers fell to 9-14 overall and 1-5 in the PSAC Central.
Entering the series ranked first and second in the PSAC in opponents' batting average respectively, Parker tossed a two-hitter in game one and Bortner followed suit with an identical two-hitter in the nightcap. Parker issued one walk and struck out five to improve to 7-1 on the season while Bortner walked one and struck out eight to run her record to 11-3 overall.
The duo received plenty of offense from several unsung heroes on Friday, most notably junior second baseman
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) who went 5-for-8 with two runs scored and three runs batted in on the afternoon. She culminated her day by belting her first collegiate home run in the top of the seventh inning of game two. Hall entered the doubleheader with just seven at bats in the first 27 games of the season.
Game one was a pitchers' duel for the first four innings until the Huskies broke through with four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-0 advantage. Sophomore
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) started the rally with a one-out double to right center and then scored when junior
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) singled up the middle two batters later. Sophomore
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) followed with an RBI single that scored Parker who had walked earlier in the inning. Senior
Erica Keen (Gordonville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) doubled to drive home Tomaschik for a 3-0 lead. Sophomore
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) capped off the scoring with an RBI single that plated Wheeland.
Bloomsburg added a run in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Back-to-back singles from freshman
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) and Mayhew gave the Huskies runners at the corners with one out. Parker brought home Winkelman with a sacrifice fly to right field for her team-leading 35th RBI of the season.
The Mountaineers ruined Parker's shutout bid with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a walk, a fielder's choice, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and an RBI fielder's choice from Koryn Wickwire.
Bloomsburg outhit Mansfield, 14-2, in the opener with Casey leading the way with three hits in four at bats. Winkelman, Mayhew, Wheeland, Keen, and Hall each had two hits in the victory.
Ashley Inman suffered the loss for Mansfield to fall to 5-8 on the season.
In game two, Bloomsburg scored one run in every inning except the fourth to complete the sweep.
With two outs in the top of the first, Parker singled and advanced to second when Wheeland reached on an error. Back-to-back walks to Tomaschik and Keen plated the Huskies' only run of the inning with Keen picking up her 13th RBI of the season with the bases-loaded free pass.
Mansfield came right back in the bottom of the first against Bortner, taking advantage of back-to-back hit batters by the Huskies' righthander. Kayla Hahn eventually drove in the Mounties' only run with an RBI single to tie the game.
Bortner settled down and only allowed just two more base runners over the final six innings - a single and an error - both of which came in the sixth inning.
Bloomsburg took the lead for good in the top of the second on an RBI single from Mayhew that scored Hall, who had reached on an error. In the third, Hall drove home Keen with an RBI single to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Huskies went back to work in the fifth when Hall singled home junior
Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) who had started the inning with a double. Tomaschik plated a run with an RBI double in the sixth and finally Hall launched her first collegiate home run to lead off the top of the seventh inning.
The Huskies had 11 more hits in game two with Hall and Parker collecting three apiece. Quinlan had a pair of hits to help the offense.
Mansfield's Sierra Storm suffered the loss as she fell to 4-2 on the season after allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits in four innings.
Bloomsburg will return to Jan M. Hutchinson Field on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown for a conference doubleheader. The games were initially scheduled to be played in Johnstown, but had to be moved to Bloomsburg due to playing conditions. First pitch is set to be thrown at 1:00 p.m.
