BLOOMSBURG--The Bloomsburg University softball team will look to build off of their solid 3-1 start when they travel to Clermont, Fl. to play six games in four days from Mar. 6-9. The Huskies will take on Felician University, Ashland University, the University of Sioux Falls, Cedarville University, College of Saint Rose and Minnesota State University – Mankato during its trip down south.
Following these games, the Huskies will travel back north to Salem, Virginia for the Regional Crossover Tournament, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan, where they will play five more games from Mar. 11-13.
Last weekend at the Coker College tournament in South Carolina the Huskies won three out of four, including winning both of their games on Sunday, Feb. 28. The Huskies won a close contest against Less-Mcrae College 6-5 and shutout King University (TN) 4-0 in an eight inning contest.
The Huskies' pitching staff is off to an outstanding start this season, limiting their opponents to five runs or less in all four games so far this season. Bloomsburg ranks number one overall in the PSAC in pitching with a 1.21 ERA.
Sarah Bortner (Glenville, Pa./South Western) is off to an outstanding start so far. In her 15.1 innings pitched (two starts) she has only given up two earned runs and three hits. Her 0.91 ERA is sixth in the PSAC. Bortner is 2-0 so far on the season.
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) has a 1-0 record and a 0.78 ERA, which is fifth in the PSAC. Tomaschik has pitched nine innings (one start), giving up one earned-run on seven hits.
The Huskies offense has kept the Huskies in every game so far and will look to continue that trend over the Spring Break trip. As a team, the Huskies are batting .279, which is ranked the seventh-highest batting average in the PSAC. The team is slugging .477, which is ranked fifth in the conference. The Huskies have scored 17 runs with 31 hits, five home runs and nine walks.
Junior
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) leads the Huskies with a .500 batting average, with five hits in her 10 at-bats so far this season. She is ranked 12
th overall in the conference in batting average and seventh in slugging at .900.Junior
Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) is also off to a strong offensive start with a .400 batting average. Peacock is slugging .800 with four hits, a double and three RBI in 10 at-bats.Â
Five Huskies have hit the long ball this season. Sophomore
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), Parker, Peacock,
Erica Keen (Gordonville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), and
Marissa Shelhamer (Nescopeck, Pa./Central Columbia) have all gone the distance.
Action will get underway on Sunday and Monday at 9 am and 11 am on Wednesday.
