Baseball Rebounds For Doubleheader Sweep Of Virginia State On Monday

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

ETTRICK, Va. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak by posting a doubleheader sweep of Virginia State on Monday afternoon. The Huskies won the opener by a 7-2 final and then completed the sweep with a 9-3 victory in the nightcap. Bloomsburg improved to 8-5 on the season while the Trojans dropped to 1-12 overall.

In the opener, the Huskies got a strong performance from sophomore Mike Vranesich (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), making his first start of the season, and freshman Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), who polished off the Trojans with his second save of the year. Vranesich, who started just one time as a freshman a year ago, went four and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He walked five and struck out four and left with the Huskies leading 4-2 in the fifth inning. Raines struck out Aaron Harris with the bases loaded to close out the fifth and then allowed one hit over the last two scoreless innings.

Bloomsburg's offense came to life in the top of the fourth inning as it scored three times to take a 3-0 lead. Junior Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) drove home the first run of the game with an RBI single that scored sophomore Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) who led off the frame with a single. Two batters later, senior Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) drove home Muth and senior Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional), who doubled, with a two-run single.

The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Huskies got the run back in the top of the fifth when sophomore Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) plated senior Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI) with an RBI groundout.

Virginia State scored again in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Huskies' lead to 4-2 before Bloomsburg put the game away with a run in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Casselberry had an RBI single in the sixth while redshirt sophomore Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and Muth added run-scoring base hits in the seventh.

Bloomsburg had 13 hits in the opener - three from Benson and two each from Muth, Kirman, Casselberry, and Almand.

Jordan Claytor suffered the loss for the Trojans. He allowed seven runs on 13 hits while going the distance. He did not issue a walk and struck out two.

In the nightcap, the Huskies scored five times in the final two innings to break open a 4-3 game.

With Bloomsburg ahead by only a run, the Huskies plated three runs in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 7-3. Freshman Joey Wrabel (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) drove home the first run of the inning with an RBI single and Benson followed with a run-scoring single of his own. The final run of the frame came when Benson scored on a wild pitch.

In the seventh, Bloomsburg added two insurance runs on an RBI groundout by Wrabel and a run-scoring single from Edgette.

The Huskies opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the third against Virginia State starter Johnny Rowe. Edgette plated the first run of the contest with an RBI single that scored Benson who reached on a one-out-walk and stole second. Muth drove home Edgette with a single and, three batters later, Almand drove home Muth with a base hit.

The Trojans scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third against freshman Wyatt Beakler (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) who was making his first collegiate start. But, the Huskies responded with a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Kirman.

Beakler allowed two runs in the bottom of the fifth that trimmed the Huskies' lead to 4-3.

Freshman Logan Zavada (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) relieved Beakler to start the sixth and allowed two hits and a walk in two scoreless innings. Beakler pitched well in his first collegiate start, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out four.

Bloomsburg had 14 hits and stole ten bases in the second game against Rowe and David Markins. The Huskies had only nine stolen bases through the first ten games of the season.

Edgette had three hits and three stolen bases while Almand also had three hits for the Huskies. Woelfel had three stolen bases while Benson had two hits and two steals.

The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, March 9 with a doubleheader at Philadelphia University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
