Game 2 Box ScorePHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team had a strong day at the plate, and a strong day on the mound, as it earned a doubleheader sweep at Philadelphia University on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies won by the scores of 6-2 and 8-2 to extend their winning streak to four. Bloomsburg improved to 10-5 on the season while the Rams dropped to 3-7.
Sophomore
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) went the distance in the opener and allowed two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out seven. Sixteen of the twenty-one outs he recorded were via strikeout or groundout. He was the beneficiary of 13 Bloomsburg hits to improve to 2-1 on the season while lowering his earned run average to 2.65. It was his second career complete game.
In the nightcap, senior
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) improved to 2-0 after allowing two runs on six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out seven before giving way to freshman
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) who closed out the contest with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh. The Bloomsburg offense gave the duo all the support they would need with eight runs on nine hits.
In game one, the Huskies staked Newmyer to a 3-0 lead with a three-spot in the top of the third inning against the Rams' Jonathon Gottschall. Sophomore
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) led off the inning with a double and scored when redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East)Â followed with a double of his own. Two batters later, senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) continued to swing a hot bat as he laced a single to left to drive home Edgette. Bloomsburg's third run of the frame scored on an RBI fielder's choice from freshman
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South).
Bloomsburg extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth on back-to-back home runs from Kirman and senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton). It was Kirman's ninth round-tripper of the season while Casselberry got on the board with his first of the year.
The Rams broke up Newmyer's shutout bid with a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-1. But, the Huskies got the run right back in the top of the sixth on an RBI double to left center off the bat of junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland).
Philadelphia finished off the scoring with a leadoff home run by Timothy Brodhag in the bottom of the sixth.
Benson went 3-for-5 in the opener with a pair of doubles. Edgette, Kirman, senior
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI), and sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) each chipped in with a pair of hits.
Bloomsburg jumped out quickly in game two, as Muth gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run to left field. The four-bagger also plated Benson who led off the inning by reaching on an error. The Huskies extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third when Kirman singled through the left side of the infield to score Edgette.
The Rams cut the Bloomsburg lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth against Carpenter. Steven Wells led off the frame with a home run while the second run scored on a squeeze bunt by Matthew McGee.
That, however, would be as close as the Rams would get. Bloomsburg got the runs back in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple from Benson and a run-scoring single from Muth. Then, the Huskies broke the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh for the final margin. Edgette led off the seventh with his first home run of the season, second of his career, to left field. Woelfel drove home the other two runs with a single to center that scored Casselberry and freshman
Tristan Kevitch (Ardmore, Pa./Harriton).
Muth, Edgette, and Woelfel had two hits apiece while Muth added a game-high three runs batted in to help the Huskies complete the sweep.
Bloomsburg will open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Friday, March 18 with a trip to East Stroudsburg for a doubleheader against the Warriors. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The teams will reconvene at Bloomsburg on Saturday, March 19 in the home opener for the Huskies.
