Huskies Off to Best Start Since 2013 After Monday Sweep

SIOUX FALLS BOX   |    CEDARVILLE BOX

CLERMONT, FL—Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) went a combined 5-8 with four runs batted in to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a sweep of its games on Monday. The Huskies downed Sioux Falls, 11-4, and then beat Cedarville, 6-0, at the National Training Center.
 
GAME ONE
In the opener the Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Sioux Falls (7-4). Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) reached on an error to lead of the at-bat for Bloomsburg and took second on a two-out walk to Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield). Tomaschik then singled scoring Mayhew with Erica Keen (Gordonville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) following with her own RBI hit scoring Winkelman to make it 2-0.
 
Sioux Falls rallied in the top half of the second inning scoring four times with two outs to go on top 4-2.
 
Bloomsburg got one run back in the bottom of the second on a single by Winkelman. Sarah Bortner (Glenville, Pa./South Western) reached on an error and moved to second on a single by Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat). She then came in to score on WInkelman's hit.
 
The Huskies broke the game open in the fourth inning scoring five times on four hits and taking advantage of three errors. Carcasses led off with a single and scored on Mayhew's two-run homer to make it 5-4. Winkelman then reached on an error and came in when Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) hit a two-run homer making it 7-4. Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) then reached on an error and came around to score on Tomaschik's double to make it an 8-4 game.
 
In the bottom of the fifth the Huskies made it 10-4 with Tomaschick and Marissa Shelhamer (Nescopeck, Pa./Central Columbia) getting RBI hits. The Huskies added a single run in the sixth on Parker's fielder's choice ground out.
 
Tomaschik finished 3-4 in game one with three RBI, while Winkelman went 3-5 with an RBI and Parker 1-5 with three RBI. Bortner got the win in the circle with 5.1 innings of relief work. She allowed just one hit, walked one and fanned five.
 
GAME TWO
Sarah Bortner (Glenville, Pa./South Western) tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Huskies to a 6-0 win over Cedarville (1-5) on Monday.
 
The Huskies struck first in the game scoring in the top of the first inning. Winkelman reached on an error by the right fielder and advanced to third base. After Parker walked, Tomaschik singled up the middle scoring Winkelman.
 
Cedarville threatened in the bottom of the first putting two runners on with two outs, but Bortner got a strikeout to end the inning.
 
Bloomsburg added to its lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) both singled with one out putting runners at first and second. Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) then doubled to left center with Casey scoring easily and Quinlan taking third. But Cedarville escaped further damage by getting two pop ups to end the inning.
 
Meanwhile Bortner was mowing down the Yellow Jackets not allowing just one hit after the the first inning (a third inning single). The junior retired 13 of the final 14 batters she faced in the game.
 
The Huskies gave her some breathing room in the seventh scoring four times. Parker had a two-run single in the inning, while Casey also added a two-run double to make it 6-0.
 
Tomaschik went 2-4 with a run scored an an RBI, while Parker and Casey each went 2-3 with two RBI.
 
Bloomsburg goes to 7-1 on the season and is off to its best start since the 2013 season when it also went 7-1.  The Huskies are idle on Tuesday and will face the College of St. Rose and Minnesota State-Mankato on Wednesday.

NOTES: Parker is hitting .423 with three homers and 12 RBI through the first eight games. A year ago Parker, for the season, had just two homers and 11 RBI....Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) leads the team with 10 runs scored...As a team the Huskies have outscored opponents 46-23 through the first eight games.
