PREVIEW: Softball To Play Four Games This Weekend; Home Against UPJ Saturday

STORYLINE
Bloomsburg looks to keep its nine-game winning streak going with two doubleheaders against PSAC Central opponents this weekend. On Friday, April 1, the Huskies will travel to Mansfield to take on the Mountaineers for a 2:30 PM doubleheader. On Saturday, the Huskies will take on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown for a home doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Pitt-Johnstown but has been moved to Bloomsburg.

LAST MEETING
Last year, the Huskies played two doubleheaders against Mansfield. The Huskies hosted Mansfield first, beating them in both games by scores of 5-0 and 3-1. The team traveled to Mansfield for their last doubleheader of the regular season, going 1-1. Bloomsburg quietly lost the first game 3-1, then exploded in the second game, picking up a 15-1 win.

This will be the first time the Bloomsburg and the Pitt-Johnstown softball teams have faced off. Last year marked was the Lady Cats' inaugural season.

SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG
The Huskies are 23-4 overall, 4-0 in the PSAC Central, and currently have a nine-game winning streak. This past week, the Huskies swept Clarion by scores of 4-1 and 9-0 on March 22, IUP by the finals of 9-0 and 10-4 on March 26, and Holy Family by counts of 6-2 and 7-2 on March 28. Bloomsburg is currently batting .327 as a team, and seven Huskies have averages above .300. Junior Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) leads the way, with a .388 batting average, 34 RBI, 33 hits, nine doubles, and 10 home runs in 85 at-bats. She leads the team in homers and RBI. Freshman Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) follows, with a .380 average, 10 RBI, 35 hits, one home run and nine doubles in 92 at-bats. Winkelman is tied for the team lead in hits with sophomore Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), who has a .368 average, 23 RBI, six doubles and five home runs in 95 at-bats. In the circle, the Huskies have a 1.75 ERA. Junior Sarah Bortner (Glenville, Pa./South Western) (10-3) leads the way with her 1.27 ERA. In her 77.1 innings of work she has allowed 23 runs on 50 hits and 83 strikeouts. She has made 17 appearances and started 10 games. Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) (6-1) also has an ERA under 2 with her mark of 1.66. She has made eight starts and has given up 17 runs on 30 hits and 46 strikeouts in 46.1 innings of work.

SCOUTING MANSFIELD
Mansfield enters with a 9-12 record overall. This past week the Mountaineers went 1-3, losing both games of their doubleheader against University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown on March 25 by scores of 6-2 and 12-6, and going 1-1 in their doubleheader against Lock Haven on March 26, losing the first game 4-0 and winning the second game 4-3. Mansfield is hitting .285 as a team. Sophomore Rachel Sterner leads the way, hitting .452 with 17 RBI, 28 hits, five doubles, a triple and six home runs in 62 at-bats. Three Mountaineers are hitting above .300. Sophomore Melanie Taylor leads the way, hitting .379 with 34 RBI, 22 hits, and six doubles in 58 at-bats. Senior Amanda Goodwin also has six doubles, batting .349. Pitching-wise, the team collectively has a 3.92 ERA. Sophomore Sierra Storm (4-1) leads the pack with her 2.76 ERA, allowing 18 runs on 35 hits and 28 strikeouts in 33 innings of work. She has made six starts and 10 appearances. Senior Ashley Inman has made 12 starts in 13 appearances and has a 3.08 ERA.

SCOUTING PITT-JOHNSTOWN
The Lady Cats enter with a 6-11 record, winning three out of their last four games. On March 25, the Lady Cats swept Mansfield by scores of 6-2 and 12-6. On March 26, UPJ went 1-1 against Clarion, losing the first game 6-2 and then winning the second game 12-9. Four Lady Cats are hitting above .300. Sophomore Marley Elbin is hitting .387 with five RBI and 12 hits in 31 at-bats. Freshman Morgan Cannin leads the team in hits with 21 and is hitting .350. Sophomore McKenna Kern leads in RBI with eight. UPJ's pitching staff has a 4.60 ERA. Sophomore Melissa Wagner (2-8) has made eight starts and 11 appearances. She has a 2.94 ERA and has given up 45 runs on 72 hits and 55 strikeouts in 69 innings of work.
