Game 2 Box ScoreWEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team suffered its second consecutive doubleheader sweep against West Chester on Monday afternoon, this time at the Golden Rams' Serpico Stadium. Bloomsburg's comeback bid fell a run short in game one as West Chester held off the Huskies, 5-4. The Golden Rams completed the sweep with a 7-2 victory in game two to send the Huskies to their fourth consecutive loss and a 20-14 overall record. Bloomsburg fell to 7-9 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. Meanwhile, West Chester improved to 20-9 overall and 10-6 in league play.
Three West Chester pitchers combined to hold the Huskies, who entered the contest batting .334 as a team, to just seven hits in game one and six in game two. Senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland), who entered with 23 combined home runs and 77 combined runs batted in, went 1-for-10 at the plate on Monday with zero RBI.
Redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) did, however, have another fine day at the plate with three hits in six at bats to raise his season batting average to .484. Earlier in the day, Edgette was named Co-PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Week after batting .785 (13-of-17) in four games last week.
The hosts jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings in game one against senior righthander
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport). West Chester's Bill Ford drew a bases loaded walk in the second to give the Golden Rams a 1-0 advantage. Shane Dressler had an RBI single in the third to extend the lead to 2-0 while the second run of the inning scored on a double play.
Bloomsburg got a run back in the top of the fourth inning against West Chester starter, Nick Stallings. Edgette led off the inning with an opposite-field double down the left field line and scored on an RBI single from senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton).
However, West Chester scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 5-1, getting an RBI double from Ford and a run-scoring single by Drew Diehl.
Edgette cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to left center, plating senior
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI) who doubled to lead off the frame. After freshman
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) drove home Kirman with a single in the top of the sixth, the Huskies found themselves only down two heading to the seventh.
In the seventh, sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) singled and sophomore
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with nobody out against Stallings. Josh McClain entered for the Golden Rams but Edgette greeted him with a sacrifice bunt to advance both Woelfel and Benson 90 feet with one out. After McClain retired Casselberry on an infield pop fly, the West Chester closer uncorked a wild pitch which allowed Woelfel to score and the potential tying run - Benson - to move to third. Kirman walked to put runners at the corners with two outs, but McClain ended the contest by getting Muth to hit into a fielder's choice.
Carpenter suffered his first loss of the season (3-1) after allowing five runs on eight hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out four. Stallings improved to 3-2 for West Chester by scattering seven hits and four runs (three earned) in six innings. He walked two and struck out four. McClain picked up his fourth save of the year.
Edgette had two of Bloomsburg's seven hits in the opener.
After two scoreless innings in game two, Bloomsburg got on the board in the top of the third courtesy of a two-run home run from Casselberry - his seventh of the season. Edgette, who singled with two outs to prolong the inning, scored on the Casselberry round tripper.
But, in the bottom half, the Golden Rams scored five runs on six hits to take a 5-2 lead against redshirt junior righthander
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall). West Chester's Nick Bateman put the finishing touches on the frame with a two-run single up the middle.
West Chester added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles from Dressler and Joe Sheeran to end the afternoon for Amaike. Sophomore
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) entered and slammed the door on the Golden Ram offense. However, Bloomsburg could not generate any more offense against West Chester starter, Andrew Gernert, who went the distance.
The Huskies had four hits through three innings, but only got hits from Benson in the fifth and Muth in the sixth the rest of the way.
Gernert improved to 5-0 for West Chester after allowing two runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out five. Amaike fell to 1-4 on the season allowing seven runs on ten hits in 3.2 innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. Newmyer allowed three hits and a walk in two and one-third scoreless innings. He struck out three.
The schedule does not get any easier for the Huskies as Bloomsburg will embark on a four-game weekend series against the third-ranked Marauders of Millersville University, who have lost just three times in 34 games this season. Friday's doubleheader will be at Millersville while the teams will meet up at Danny Litwhiler Field on Saturday afternoon, April 16. Both twinbills are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
