Game 2 Box ScoreMILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at second-ranked Millersville University on Friday afternoon as the Huskies' losing skid reached six games. The Marauders took game one by an 8-0 final and then completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two. Bloomsburg dropped to 20-16 overall and 7-11 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while Millersville improved to 33-3 overall and 16-2 in league play.
The Huskies were limited to three hits in the opener - singles by freshman
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South), junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland), and redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) - against Millersville righthander, Brandon Miller, who improved to 7-1 on the season. Miller did not walk a batter and struck out 11 over the course of six innings.
Millersville broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 7-0 lead against sophomore righthander
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional). Dan Neff, Dan Stoltzfus, and Ben Snyder each drove home a pair for the Marauders during the outburst.
The Marauders added one more in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Stoltzfus to close the scoring.
Warren dropped to 4-4 on the season after allowing eight runs (six earned) on ten hits in five and two-thirds innings. He walked three and struck out two. Freshman
Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) pitched to one batter in the bottom of the sixth and retired him on a fly ball to right field.
The Huskies only got two batters to second base in game one - Muth in the second and Edgette in the third.
Bloomsburg fared a little better at the plate in game two as the Huskies collected eight hits against two Millersville pitchers. Edgette and senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) had two hits apiece in the nightcap, but they were not enough.
Millersville scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead against redshirt sophomore righthander
Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County). The Marauders added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-0 advantage to the top of the sixth.
The Huskies scored their only run of the afternoon in the sixth when Muth led off the inning with a double down the right field line, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah), then crossed the dish on an RBI groundout from Shiffer.
The hosts plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to for a 6-1 margin and thse proved to be the final runs of the game. Bloomsburg threatened in the top of the seventh as Edgette and Casselberry collected back-to-back singles with two outs. But, Millersville closer Mike Mock retired senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) on a fly ball to center to end the threat.
With the loss, Meyer dropped to 2-4 on the season. He allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. Cordell Shannon improved to 6-1 for the Marauders, going six innings and allowing a run on six hits. He walked one and struck out five. Mock allowed two hits and struck out a batter in a scoreless seventh inning.
Redshirt freshman catcher
Brandyn Smith (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) collected his first collegiate hit with a single in the top of the fourth inning. Meanwhile, with a hit in game one and two more in game two, Edgette extended his hitting streak to eight games and has now hit safely in 24 of his last 25 games.
The teams will reconvene at Danny Litwhiler Field on Saturday, April 16. First pitch of the twinbill is slated for 1:00 p.m.
