HTML Box ScoreBLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team earned its third victory in the last five matches as it took care of visiting Kutztown University, 8-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. The Huskies improved to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) while the Golden Bears dropped to 3-11 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
With the victory, Bloomsburg leapfrogged Kutztown for third place in the Eastern Division standings - the top three teams in each division advance to the PSAC Tournament later this month.
The Huskies took a 3-0 lead in the match with a clean sweep in doubles competition. Junior
Anna Newcomer (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) and freshman
Siena Cerra (Levittown/Neshaminy) posted the most lopsided victory with an 8-2 win over Kutztown's duo of Vicki Norman and Ashley Carter at #3. Senior
Lindsey Tennis (Quakertown/Quakertown) and freshman
Cassandra Wentz (Windber/Winber Area) won 8-5 at #2 while sophomore
Catherine Garrity (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) and freshman
Gabriela Bachinski (Cascavel, Panama/Colegio Estadula) teamed up for an 8-4 win at #1.
Wentz gave the Huskies a 4-0 advantage when she defeated Yasmeen Malik in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0, at #3 singles. Bachinski clinched the match when she posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at #1.
Garrity, Cerra, and senior
Meredith Endy (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) also posted singles victories for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg will look to secure its spot in the PSAC Tournament when it hosts Cheyney University on Saturday afternoon, April 16, in the final regular season conference match of the year. Start time from the Burt Reese Tennis Center is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
