GAME TWOBLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball upped its winning streak to 19 games with a sweep of Mansfield University on Friday by scores of 7-2 and 9-1 in five innings. Bloomsburg is now 33-4, 14-0 in the PSAC Central, and has equaled its longest winning streak since the 2011 season.
Â
In the opener the Huskies rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post the win. Trailing 2-0 the Huskies scored four unearned runs in the fourth inning.
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) led off with a single and was pinch run for by
Abbey Remley (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area). After a ground out advanced Remley to second, she took third on a wild pitch. Mansfield then got out number two on a strikeout. The inning appeared to be over when
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) hit a grounder to shortstop, but the throw was wild allowing Remley to score.
Erica Keen (Gordonville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was then hit by a pitch with both runners moving up a base on a wild pitch.
Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) then walked to load the bases followed by
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) walking to force in a run.
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) then singled up the middle to score Keen and Quinlan making it a 4-2 game.
Â
Bloomsburg made it 5-1 in the fifth when Mayhew doubled and scored on Tomaschik's single. The Huskies threatened for more, but left the bases loaded. In the sixth the Huskies got some insurance by scoring twice. Hall singled to lead off and moved to third on two ground outs. Parker then doubled scoring her with the sixth run. Parker later scored on Tomaschik's single.
Â
Mansfield put two runners on base in the seventh, but Parker ended the game with a strikeout.
Â
Hall finished game one 3-3 with two runs batted in, while Tomaschik was 2-4 with two RBI. Parker got her ninth win of the year by striking out seven and walking three.
Â
In the nightcap Parker was the hitting star as the Huskies banged out 14 hits. Bloomsburg took a 2-0 lead in the first.
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) singled to lead off with Mayhew reaching on a throwing error on a bunt attempt. On the throw, which went down the right field, Winkelman raced around to score. Parker singled moving Mayhew to second with Mayhew later scoring on Tomaschik's single.
Â
Mansfield got one run back in the second to make it 2-1. Bloomsburg, though, made it 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Keen and
Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) singled to lead off the inning. A fly out to deep center advanced Keen to third. She later scored on a force out off the bat of Mayhew.
Â
In the third Hall singled home
Rachel Breuninger (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) to make it 4-1 in the third, then added three more runs in the fourth. Winkelman and Mayhew hit back-to-back doubles leading off the inning for a 5-1 lead. Parker followed with a single scoring Mayhew. Parker took second on Tomaschik's single and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby).
Â
Bloomsburg closed out the win by mercy rule scoring twice in the fifth. With one out, McElroy doubled and scored on Parker's fly out to center.
Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area), pinch-running for Winkelman who walked, scored from third when Tomaschik's grounder to short was misplayed allowing Smith to score the winning run.
Â
Parker went 3-3 with two RBI, while Mayhew was 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Tomaschik got the win in the circle giving up four hits and striking out three and not issuing a walk. The junior is now 10-0 on the year.
