Brigid Kyne (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) scored her 100th collegiate goal but it wasn't enough as the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-6 decision at Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival Kutztown University on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-9 in the PSAC while the Golden Bears improved to 7-9 overall and 3-8 in conference play.
The loss snapped a 15-game winning streak by the Huskies in the all-time series against the Golden Bears. Kutztown's last victory over Bloomsburg, prior to Wednesday, came during the 1985 campaign.
Kyne's goal with 12:26 left in the second half gave the junior forward the milestone. She became the 14th player in program history to reach the 100-career goal plateau and is now nine goals behind Kim Springman (2007-10) for 13th place on the school's all-time list.
Kutztown's Sarah Gabriele and Lauren Huggins, who had combined to score 74 of the Golden Bears' 145 goals prior to Wednesday, totaled nine of the host's 14 tallies in the victory. Huggins paced the Golden Bears with five while Gabriele added four for Kutztown, which won for just the second time in its last eleven games.
Kyne and freshman
Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) had two goals apiece for the Huskies while sophomore
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) and senior
Stephanie Hostrander (Painted Post, N.Y./CPP West) also scored for the maroon and gold.
The Golden Bears jumped out of the gate quickly with three goals in the opening five minutes to take a 3-0 lead. Turner and Kyne scored - just over a minute apart -Â shortly thereafter to cut the Kutztown advantage to 3-2 with 21:36 left in the opening half. Huggins and Hostrander exchanged goals over the next ten minutes to keep the margin at 4-3 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the opening thirty minutes.
Kutztown, however, scored the final two goals of the first half to take a 6-3 lead at intermission. The Golden Bears did not let up as they scored the first three goals of the second half to take a 9-3 advantage with 19:42 remaining.
Bloomsburg scored three of the next four goals - two by Jaskuta - to cut the lead to 10-6 with 11:51 left. But, Kutztown scored the final four goals of the game to erase any thoughts of a Huskies' comeback.
Turner and freshman
Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) added assists for Bloomsburg, which also got a strong performance from freshman
Abby Nocito (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) who collected three ground balls, two draw controls, and caused three turnovers.
Junior
Abbey Burnett (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) started in goal for the Huskies and dropped to 3-7 on the season. She stopped seven Kutztown shots in 38:39 of action. Sophomore
Brittney Hegarty (Rochester, N.Y./Rush Henrietta) posted four saves in 21:21 of relief.
Abby Cox stopped 14 Bloomsburg shots to earn her second win of the season for Kutztown.
The Huskies will conclude the 2016 regular season on Tuesday, April 26, with a home contest against Shippensburg at Steph Pettit Stadium. Bloomsburg will honor its lone senior -
Stephanie Hostrander (Painted Post, N.Y./CPP West) - prior to the 3:00 p.m. start time.
