QUAKERTOWN---Bloomsburg University's
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) pitched a two-hit shutout and
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield)'s solo homer was the only run of the game leading the Huskies to a 1-0 win over Milllersvlle in game one of the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) playoffs.
With the win the Huskies, now 40-6, advance to face Gannon on Thursday at noon at Veterans Park in Quakertown. The Golden Knights upset West Chester in its opening game, 3-1. The game time is moved up from 3 pm due to rain in the forecast.
After Millersville left two runners, on walks, stranded in the top of the first inning, the Huskies struck quickly in the bottom of the inning. Winkelman, a freshman, worked the count to 2-1 and then hit a long homer to left that easily cleared the fence giving th Huskies a 1-0 lead. For Winkelman it was her second homer of the year.
The Marauders got a leadoff single to start the second. After bunting the runner to second, Parker got a strikeout and ground out to end the inning.
Bloomsburg nearly got a second homer in the bottom of the second, but
Erica Keen (Gordonville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan)'s opposite field shot to left was caught at the fence. In the top of the third, Parker retired Millersville in order getting two outs by strikeout.kcc
The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the third on back-to-back singles by
Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) and Winkelman. Millersville got out of the jam though getting an interference call in the base path and a ground out.
In the top of the fourth Millersville got a leadoff single from Kelsey Campbell. Maria Spinosa followed with a bunt that was fielded byBloomsburg's
Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) whose throw to first was high allowing Campbell to get to third. Raeann Buskey then hit a shallow fly to right that was caught by
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge). Campbell beat Mayhew's throw home, but the Huskies appealed to third and Campbell was called out for having left early keeping it a 1-0 game.
The Huskies put two on in the fifth but came up empty. With one out
Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) doubled with Winkelman drawing a walk to put runners on first and second. But Millersville got a line out and ground out to end the inning.
Parker meanwhile was getting into a grove. She retired 10 straight from the fourth through two outs in the seventh when she issued a base on balls. However, Parker got pinchitter Melanie Snyder to fly out to center to end the game.
Parker goes to 13-1 with the win striking out six and walking three. Winkelman and Carcasses each went 2-2 combining to get four of the Huskies five hits.
