QUAKERTOWN—
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) tossed a three-hit shutout and
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a 3-0 win over Gannon University on Thursday on day two of the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Championships.
Â
The Huskies, 41-6, will move to the semifinal round on Friday against California (PA), a 7-2 winner over Lock Haven. Game time, weather permitting, is set for noon.
Â
Just like in its opening round win over Millersville, the Huskies jumped out on top quickly. Winkelman, the leadoff hitter, opened the game by doubling down the right field line. Sophomore
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) then hit a hard shot to third base that ricocheted off the glove of the third baseman and into left field. The speedy Winkelman scored easily on the play putting the Huskies on top 1-0.
Â
Tomaschik was sharp right from the start striking out the side in the bottom of the first despite issuing a rare walk (just her 15
th on the year). She would walk a second batter in the third inning, but kept the Golden Knights hitless through three innings.
Â
Bloomsburg added to its lead in the top of the third inning. With one out,
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run), the pitching star in game one, hit her 12
th homer of the year, a solo shot, to left field making it 2-0.
Â
Gannon finally got its first hit in the fourth inning, a clean, two-out hit to right field, but Tomaschik picked up a strike out to end the inning.
Â
The Golden Knights started the fifth inning with a single followed by a double to left center putting runners at second and third with no outs. Tomaschik, though, got a weak grounder to first for one out with no advance by the runners. She then got a strikeout for out number two. She issued a walk to load the bases before getting a swinging strikeout ato retire the side and keep it a 2-0 game.
Â
Bloomsburg added an insurance run in the sixth. With one out
Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) singled with
Abbey Remley (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) coming in to pinch-run. After
Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) was called out after her bunt attempt hit the plate, Winkelman delivered a shot to left field. The outfielder initially started in the ball that seemed to be rising as it reached the outfield. The fielder jumped, but the ball went off her glove and, despite diving, could not make the catch, allowing Remley to race around and score the third run for the Huskies.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh Tomaschik struck out the first two batters before issuing he fourth walk of the game. She got a swinging strikeout, though, to end the game and advance the Huskies to the next round.
Â
For Tomaschik the win was the 14
th for her against no losses this season. She fanned 10 and walked four.
Â
In two games so far in the PSAC playoffs the Huskies have not allowed a run in 14 innings and surrendered just five hits.
