Game 2 Box ScoreBLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team used three huge innings on Wednesday to cruise to a pair of victories over visiting Philadelphia University on a cold and blustery afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field. The Huskies scored 17 times in the sixth inning to earn a 21-0 victory in the opener. Then, in game two, Bloomsburg scored eight runs in the third and seven more runs in the fourth to post a 19-9 win to complete the sweep. With the victories, the Huskies improved to 20-10 overall on the season while the Rams fell to 10-21 on the year.
Bloomsburg has now won eight straight - the most since winning eight straight from April 9 to April 18, 2014. The last time a Huskies' team won more than eight in a row was from April 22 to April 27, 2013, when the team won nine consecutive games.
All told, the Huskies scored 40 runs in the twinbill - the most by the program since scoring 41 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Clarion on April 28, 2013 (30-2; 11-1).
The 17-run sixth inning during game one marked the most runs scored in one inning in school history and tied for the ninth-most runs scored in an inning in NCAA Division II history. The Huskies sent 22 batters to the plate during the frame - tied for eighth-most in NCAA Division II history - and recorded 13 hits (tied for ninth-most in NCAA Division II history). They were also aided by two errors, three walks, and a hit batter. Bloomsburg had only managed four runs on five hits through the first five innings before breaking the game wide open in the sixth.
The offensive records were overshadowed, however, by the seven-inning gem thrown by freshman
Wyatt Beakler (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) in the opener. The rookie southpaw, making just his second start of the season, earned his first collegiate shutout to improve to 3-0 on the season. He allowed three hits and two walks while striking out four. It was Bloomsburg's first complete game shutout of the season and the first thrown by a Huskies' pitcher since
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) tossed a six-hit shutout against Kutztown on April 11, 2015.
Redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) gave Beakler all the runs he would need when he launched a two-run home run to right center against Philadelphia starter, Fernando Garza, in the bottom of the first inning. It was Edgette's second round tripper of the year.
The Huskies added two more in the bottom of the fourth against Rams' reliever Luke Floer. Freshman
Tristan Kevitch (Ardmore, Pa./Harriton) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Freshman
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) doubled home Kevitch to extend the Huskies' lead to 3-0. After Shiffer advanced to third on another wild offering from Floer, redshirt freshman
Alex Castro (Paramus, N.J./Paramus ) drove him home with a sacrifice fly to right field for a 4-0 advantage.
It was Castro's first collegiate start as he gave regular starter, senior
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI), a day off at second base.
In the sixth, the first nine Huskies reached base and six runners crossed the plate before the Rams recorded an out. Redshirt sophomore
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) had an RBI single to start the scoring which was followed by a three-run double by Edgette to extend the lead to 8-0. Junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) had an RBI single and redshirt freshman
Kyle Gaynor (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) drew a bases-loaded walk before the Rams got the first out of the inning. After that, freshman
Joey Wrabel (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah)Â stroked back-to-back two-run doubles to balloon the lead to 14-0. Three batters later, senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) drove home a pair with a double for a 16-0 advantage. Edgette scampered home on a wild pitch for the next Huskies' run and Castro completed the scoring with his first collegiate home run - a grand slam - over the left field fence.
All told, Woelfel was 3-for-3 in the inning while Castro, Wrabel, and Edgette had two hits in the frame. Wrabel started at shortstop, which allowed senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional), who leads the PSAC in home runs with 14, to take the afternoon off.
Beakler slammed the door in the seventh, pitching around a one-out single.
The Huskies had 18 hits against four Philadelphia pitchers - three each from Woelfel, Edgette, and Casselberry. Edgette scored a team-high three runs while he and Castro drove in five runs apiece to pace the Bloomsburg attack.
Game two started slowly for the Huskies as the hosts fell behind 5-1 after two-and-a-half innings.
Philadelphia scored three times in the first inning against sophomore
Mike Vranesich (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), who had to leave the game after five batters as he was struck with a line drive off the ankle. Vranesich was unable to record an out after allowing four hits and a walk before exiting. Freshman
Logan Zavada (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) came on in relief and stopped the bleeding, allowing only a sacrifice fly for the third run of the inning.
The Rams extended the lead to 4-0 in the second on a solo home run by Jeff Briggs after Zavada retired the first batter. The Huskies got the run back in the bottom of the second when Wrabel drove home redshirt freshman
Brandyn Smith (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) with a groundout. Smith had led off the inning with a walk.
Philadelphia's Brandon Quaranta restored the Rams four-run lead back with a leadoff home run off Zavada to start the third.
But, the floodgates opened again for the Huskies' offense and, once again, the Rams were left in the rearview mirror. Bloomsburg scored eight runs on six hits in the bottom of the third inning to take a 9-5 advantage. Castro started the scoring with an RBI single to left, plating Casselberry who led off the inning with a walk. Wrabel followed with an RBI single, scoring redshirt sophomore
Cy Treaster (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County), to cut the lead to 5-3. An RBI groundout from Woelfel pulled the Huskies to within a run and, after a walk to Benson kept the inning alive, Edgette continued his torrid streak at the plate with a two-run single to give Bloomsburg its first lead of the game, 6-5. Casselberry followed with a towering three-run home run to left center - his sixth of the season - to finish the scoring in the third.
The Rams scored three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the advantage to 9-8. But, Bloomsburg scored seven more runs in the bottom half to take a 16-8 lead. Benson drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run of the inning and Edgette followed with a two-run double to expand the lead to 12-8. Casselberry drove home Benson with an RBI single and Muth, who was given the green light on a 3-0 pitch, cleared the pine trees beyond the left field fence for a three-run home run - his eighth - to complete the seven-run frame.
Woelfel came on to pitch in the fifth and allowed an unearned run as Philadelphia trimmed the lead to 16-9. But, in the bottom of the sixth, Muth came up again with two runners on, and crushed a first-pitch offering over the left field fence for his second home run of the game, and ninth of the season, to finish off the Rams.
Freshman
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) pitched the seventh and allowed only a one-out walk while striking out two.
Zavada was credited with the win as he went four innings in relief of Vranesich and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out eight to improve to 2-0 on the season. Woelfel pitched two innings and allowed an unearned run on one hit. He walked three and struck out three.
Bloomsburg finished with 14 hits in game two and also took advantage of ten walks and two hit batsmen. Muth finished the nightcap 3-for-4 with two home runs and six runs batted in. Edgette also had three hits in the game two victory.
Edgette finished the twinbill with six hits in eight at bats. He scored six runs and drove in nine. Casselberry was 5-for-9 with five runs scored and six RBI while Muth was 5-for-8 with four runs scored and seven RBI. Castro, starting the first two games of his career, was 4-for-7 with three runs scored and six runs batted in.
Bloomsburg (20-10, 7-5 PSAC East) will jump back into conference action on Friday, April 8, when the Golden Rams of West Chester University (16-9, 6-6 PSAC East) visit Danny Litwhiler Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
