Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against West Chester Friday Afternoon

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Despite redshirt sophomore Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) remaining scorching hot on a cold and blustery Friday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field, the Bloomsburg University baseball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end as the visiting Golden Rams of West Chester swept the Huskies in a key Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader. West Chester took game one by a 9-8 final and then completed the sweep with a 10-1 win in game two. Bloomsburg dropped to 20-12 overall and 7-7 in league play while the Golden Rams improved to 18-9 overall and 8-6 in conference action.

Edgette went 3-for-5 with a run scored in game one and was 4-for-4 in game two to raise his batting average to .483 on the season (56-of-116). The redshirt sophomore has hit safely in 20 of his last 21 games and is 45-of-77 (.584) during the stretch. He currently ranks second in the PSAC in batting average (.483), hits (56), and on-base percentage (.545); third in runs scored (43); and tied for fourth in doubles (12).

All told, the offense collected 25 hits in the two games on Friday, but only four of those hits went for extra bases - three doubles and one home run. Entering the day, Bloomsburg ranked in the top three in the PSAC in extra-base hits on the season.

West Chester jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings in game one against sophomore righthander Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional). In the top of the second, Nick Bateman tomahawked an 0-2 fastball over the right centerfield fence for a 1-0 advantage. The Golden Rams added three in the third on a three-run home run to right field by Nick Ward.

The Huskies began to chip away in the bottom of the fourth with a run against West Chester starter, Eric Close. Junior Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) led off the inning with a double to center and eventually scored when senior Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI) popped a fly ball to right field that landed harmlessly among three West Chester players for an RBI double.

West Chester extended the lead to 6-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning but the resilient Huskies stormed back with four runs in the bottom half to cut the Golden Ram lead to 6-5.

Sophomore Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a passed ball. Senior Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) drove home his team-leading 46th run of the season with an RBI single that plated Benson. Senior Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) followed with a single and both he and Casselberry advanced to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch. Muth reached on an error that scored Casselberry to cut the lead to 6-3. Kirman later scored on a throwing error and Almand closed out the scoring with an RBI single that plated sophomore Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah), who had reached on a fielder's choice.

West Chester came back with three runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-5. But, run-scoring singles from Muth and Woelfel in the bottom half of the inning cut the lead to 9-7 and set up a near comeback in the bottom half of the seventh.

After freshman Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) pitched around a two-out single in the top of the seventh, Almand led off the bottom half with a solo home run to right center to cut the West Chester lead to 9-8. It was Almand's first round tripper of the season and his first since April 25, 2015, against East Stroudsburg.

Benson was hit by a pitch with one out and Edgette moved him to second with his third hit of game one. With Casselberry at the plate, an errant pickoff throw allowed Benson and Edgette to advance 90 feet apiece. Later in the at bat, Casselberry hit a grounder to first that was stopped, on a dive, by West Chester's Justin Roman. Roman got to his feet and threw a strike to the plate to nab Benson for the second out. With runners at the corners, Casselberry stole second, which gave Kirman, the PSAC leader in home runs a chance to win the game. However, West Chester closer Josh McClain struck out the Huskies' slugger on a high fastball to end the contest.

Warren suffered the loss for the Huskies to fall to 4-3 on the season. He allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits in six innings. He issued two walks and struck out four. Zezza allowed one hit and struck out a batter in the seventh. Close improved to 2-0 for the Golden Rams after allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits in 4.2 innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Edgette and Almand had three hits apiece while Almand drove home a team-high three runs. Benson, Muth, and freshman Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) had two hits apiece.

The Huskies managed 10 more hits in game two, but couldn't string anything together against West Chester starter Mike Cipolla, who went the distance to improve to 4-3 on the season. The Golden Ram righthander walked one and struck out four in the complete game victory.

West Chester broke open the contest with six runs in the top of the second inning against Bloomsburg redshirt sophomore starter Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County). Meyer settled down and allowed only one more run in the top of the third as the Golden Rams took a 7-0 advantage after three.

Senior Sean McCloskey (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) allowed three runs (two earned) in the top of the sixth as West Chester built a 10-0 lead.

Bloomsburg broke up Cipolla's shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth when Shiffer singled up the middle to score Kirman, who doubled down the right field line leading off the inning.

Meyer dropped to 2-3 on the season as he allowed seven runs (six earned) and ten hits in five innings. He walked four and struck out seven. McCloskey pitched the final two innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Edgette had four of Bloomsburg's ten hits while Kirman had the only extra-base hit for the Huskies with his double in the sixth inning. Shiffer had two more hits in the nightcap.

The two teams are scheduled to conclude the four-game weekend series on Sunday, April 10, in West Chester. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
