Third-Ranked Field Hockey Upset At IUP Saturday Afternoon

HTML BOX SCORE

INDIANA, Pa. – The third-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team allowed two second-half goals and saw its four-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon. With the setback, the Huskies dropped to 5-2 overall while the Crimson Hawks improved to 2-2 with the upset win.

Senior Stephanie Halsted (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) gave the Huskies a 1-0 advantage with her third goal of the season at 24:45. Freshman Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) added the assist – her second helper of the season – as Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead at intermission.

The Huskies held a 6-3 advantage in shots in the first half and held a slim, 2-1, margin in penalty corners.

But, the Crimson Hawks took over in the second half and tied the game at 1-1 just over eight minutes in when Selena West scored her second goal of the season off of a penalty corner. The goal snapped a scoreless streak of 323:35 by both senior goalkeeper Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and the team.

A little more than ten minutes later, at 53:43, Madelyn Mullen scored, what turned out to be, the game-winning goal with her first goal of the season 15 yards out.

IUP held a 5-2 edge in shots during the second half to even up the game totals at eight shots apiece. Meanwhile, the hosts had six penalty corners in the second half, compared to the Huskies' two, to hold a 7-4 edge in that category for the game.

Cassel took the loss to drop to 5-2 on the season. She turned aside two shots on the afternoon. Alyssa Lerda got the win in goal for the Crimson Hawks to improve to 2-2 on the season. She had four saves for IUP.

Bloomsburg will look to regroup on Tuesday, September 20 when Slippery Rock invades Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
