Field Hockey Team Wins Battle of Top Ten Teams

BOX SCORE (HTML)

(Story updated at 8:08 p.m.)

GARDEN CITY, NY—Sam Peters (Harrisburg, Pa./Mifflin County) scored a natural hat trick to lead the eighth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 5-1 road win over seventh-ranked Adelphi University Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

Peters became the first Huskies player to score three goals in a game since Whitney Kowski (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) did on Sept. 7, 2014 at Newberry.

Peters wasted little time getting Bloomsburg the lead scoring just 1:13 into the game. Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) pushed the ball up the right side and pushed the ball to the middle where Peters beat the goalie to the left.

It stayed 1-0 until the 30th minute of play when Peters scored her second goal taking a crossing pass from MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) from the right base line and again beat the goalie.

Early in the second half Peters got her third goal taking a pass from Jackie Shragher (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) and finished the play in front of the net with a hard shot giving her the natural hat trick (first three goals of the game).

The Huskies Peyton Shockley (Milford, Del./Milford) made it 4-0 with an unassisted goal at the 61:52 mark driving in from the top of the circle and scoring. Adelphi scored its only goal in the 66th minute before Morgan McAllister (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) scored on an assist from Geneka Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) for a 5-1 final.

Bloomsburg held a 14-6 edge in shots on goal, while the Panthers had a 9-7 edge in penalty corners.

In goal Bloomsburg's Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) got the win and made four saves.

The Huskies, 1-0, play at Pace University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
