BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team tied a season-high in goals scored on Wednesday night but it wasnt quite enough as the visiting Rams of Philadelphia University scored with 3:28 left in overtime to leave Steph Pettit Stadium with a 3-2 victory over the Huskies in a non-conference matchup. After winning its season opener, Bloomsburg has seen its winless streak reach eight as it fell to 1-7-1 overall on the season. The Rams ended a three-game winless streak and improved to 2-5-2.
The visitors jumped in front 1-0 in the tenth minute when Jason Rocha got behind the Huskies' defense and beat redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Taylor Lesage (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) for his first goal of the season. The play was set up by a beautiful outlet pass from Andrew Sauers, who was credited with the assist on the tally.
The goal proved to be the only tally of the opening half that saw shots even at 5-5 apiece.
Redshirt junior
Austin Transue (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) tied the game at 1-1 just 3:24 into the second half when he laced a shot from the top of the arc over Philadelphia goalkeeper Eric Gutierrez and just under the crossbar for his third goal of the season. He remains the only Bloomsburg player with more than one goal through the first nine games of the season.Â
Just eight minutes later, in the 56th minute, Philadelphia's Seiji Rose regained a one-goal lead for the Rams when he fired a shot from 25 yards out, on a free kick, beyond the outstretched arms of Lesage and into the back of the net. The Huskies responded again, however, as freshman
Seth Walter (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) scored his first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute to knot the game at 2-2. Bloomsburg was awarded a corner kick - one of nine corners in the half - and freshman
Duncan Mitchell (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) played a beautiful ball to the front of the goal where Walter got his head on it and beat Gutierrez to the far side. The assist was Mitchell's first collegiate point.
The score remained deadlocked at 2-2 until Philadelphia's Hunter Dyson sent the Bloomsburg faithful home quietly with his first goal of the season in the 96th minute. Rocha played a touch pass ahead to Dyson, who got behind the Huskies' defense. Lesage came out to challenge but a well-placed shot by Dyson beat the Huskies' goalkeeper to end the night.
Bloomsburg held a 16-11 advantage in shots, which included an 11-4 margin in the second half. However, the Rams took all three shots in the overtime with the third attempt being the decisive one. The Huskies held a sizeable 11-1 edge in corner kicks - 9-0 in the second half alone.
Lesage stopped five Rams' shots in the loss as he saw his record fall to 0-2 on the season. Gutierrez picked up the win with six saves in goal for the Rams. He improved to 2-4-2.
Bloomsburg will return to action on Saturday afternoon, October 1, for a conference matchup against Slippery Rock University. Start time from Steph Pettit Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
