Epic Fourth-Quarter Comeback Lifts Women's Basketball To Third Straight Win

HTML BOX SCORE

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Trailing by 17 points with just under seven minutes left in regulation, the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team outscored Kutztown University, 21-2, over the final 6:56 to shock the Golden Bears, 68-66, at the Keystone Arena on Wednesday evening. It was the Huskies' third consecutive victory who, with the win, improved to 4-12 overall and 3-9 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. Kutztown dropped to 6-14 overall and 3-9 in league play.

Kutztown held a 59-47 advantage after three quarters and then got five points from Kelsey Watson at the outset of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 64-47 with 7:08 left in regulation.

Then, senior Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) took over.

Klunk started the run on a layup with 6:56 left to cut the lead to 64-49. The Huskies, however, didn't score again until sophomore Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) hit a three-pointer with 5:27 left to trim the lead to twelve, 64-52. The Mack triple came after a Klunk steal - one of her six thefts on the night. Senior Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) followed with a layup to cut the lead to ten with 5:08 remaining.

Again, Bloomsburg would go more than a minute without scoring until Klunk cut the lead to eight, 64-56, after knocking down a pair of foul shots with 3:55 left. Freshman Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) and Ross each went 1-of-2 at the foul line and Klunk followed with a jumper to cut the lead to four, 64-60, with 2:13 left. Montana trimmed the lead to two with 1:34 left and Klunk tied the game at 64-64 with 61 seconds left on a pair of foul shots. The senior then gave the Huskies their first lead since early in the second quarter when she hit two more foul shots with 35 seconds left in regulation.

Kutztown's Sierra Taylor snapped Bloomsburg's run of 19 consecutive points when she hit a jumper with 23 seconds left to tie the game at 66-66. But, Klunk hit the eventual game-winner with 14 seconds left on the clock to cap off the comeback. Kutztown took an immediate timeout but could not get a shot off in the final 14 seconds.

Klunk scored 12 of her game-high 20 points during the fourth quarter and had three of her career-best six steals in the final ten minutes. She was also 6-of-6 at the foul line in the fourth - 8-of-8 for the game. She added six rebounds, three assists, and a career-high three blocks.

Kutztown had a 27-22 lead after a high-scoring first quarter and then held a 40-36 lead at halftime. The Huskies struggled in the third quarter as the Golden Bears outscored Bloomsburg, 19-11, in the third to hold a 59-47 lead after three.

Mack finished with 19 points with 15 of those coming in the first half. She was 7-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Ross added 11 points, five assists, and four rebounds while Montana was also in double figures as she finished with 10 and tied Klunk with a team-high six rebounds.

Taylor led four Golden Bears in double figures with 17 points.

Bloomsburg shot 46.2% (24-of-52) from the floor and had one of its best performances from the foul line on the season as it finished 15-of-21 (71.4%). The Huskies also tied a season-high with 18 assists - six from sophomore Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) which marked a career-high.

Kutztown held a significant edge in rebounding, 42-28, and outscored the Huskies in second-chance points, 20-3. Alex Heck pulled down a game-high 14 boards for the Golden Bears.

Bloomsburg, winners of three straight, will look to extend the winning streak on Saturday, January 21, when it hosts East Stroudsburg at the Nelson Field House. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
