BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Senior
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) scored just 53 seconds into overtime as the Bloomsburg University field hockey team completed a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over visiting Slippery Rock University on Saturday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies have now won two straight and three of their last four contests to improve to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while The Rock dropped to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in league play.
With the win, the Huskies improved to 45-2 lifetime against their conference rival and, more importantly, moved them into a tie for third-place in the conference standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Sophomore
Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) set up the game-winning tally with a beautiful centering feed into the circle that end up on the stick of Mahan. The senior one-timed the shot into the back of the goal for her team-leading ninth goal of the season and gave the Huskies their first overtime win of the season in five tries. It was also Mahan's second game-winner of the year, tying her for the team lead with sophomore
Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia).
The Huskies trailed, 2-1, with just over four minutes left in regulation before getting back-to-back penalty corner opportunities - the second of which resulted in the game-tying score. After working the ball around the circle, senior
Sally DeLuca (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area) sent a shot into the scoring area that was beautifully redirected by freshman
Alyssa Broadt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) and past Slippery Rock goalkeeper Maddie Murphy for her first collegiate goal with 3:48 left in regulation.
Bloomsburg had a couple of penalty corner chances at the end of regulation but were unable to convert which set up Mahan's overtime heroics.
McKay gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead exactly eight minutes into the contest with her second goal of the season as she was able to dribble through a couple of Slippery Rock defenders before firing a shot past Slippery Rock starting goalkeeper Nicole Bream just inside the near post. It was McKay's first goal since scoring against Newberry on September 3.
Just over six minutes later, Slippery Rock tied the contest at 1-1 when Brittany Morgan deflected a centering feed from Kailee Krupski past Bloomsburg freshman goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) for her fifth goal of the season. The visitors took their first lead of the contest midway through the second half when Hannah Downing beat Sheply on a penalty stroke for her second goal of the year.
Bloomsburg outshot Slippery Rock, 15-8, for the contest which included a 9-2 margin in the second half. The Huskies also owned a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.
Sheply improved to 6-5 on the season as she was credited with three saves on the afternoon. Bream started and did not make a save for Slippery Rock in the first 28:33. Murphy came on in relief and suffered the loss to fall to 5-2 on the season. She stopped four Bloomsburg shots.
The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday, October 17, when they travel to Millersville University to square off against the Marauders. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
