MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The tenth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team ended third-ranked Millersville University's streak of eight consecutive shutouts but could not keep the Marauders from winning their ninth consecutive game as the Huskies dropped a 3-2 decision at Biemesderfer Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The loss dropped Bloomsburg to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while Millersville improved to 12-3 overall and 7-1 with the victory.
Junior
Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) wasted little time snapping Millersville's consecutive streak without being scored upon when she perfectly redirected a shot from outside the circle off the stick of sophomore
Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) just under six minutes into the contest. It was Krebs' third goal of the season and it ended Millersville's consecutive shutout streak at 603:11. Hoffman picked up her second helper of the season on the goal.
But, the Marauders responded just over nine minutes later when Aliza Mizak beat freshman goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) on a blast from the top of the circle during a penalty corner opportunity. Kathleen Bishop, who took the penalty corner, earned the assist.
Millersville then took its first lead of the contest just over three minutes into the second half when Mizak scored her second goal of the game, and sixth of the season, off of an assist from Lexi Robison. Five minutes later, the lead ballooned to 3-1 as Alexis Gazzio took a pass from Courtney Weaver during a penalty corner and beat Sheply from just inside the circle for her fourth goal of the year.
The Huskies, however, would not go quietly. Sophomore
Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) found a loose ball off of a Marauder defender just inside the circle and chipped a shot over the blocker of Millersville goalkeeper Kylee Bair and just under the crossbar for her third goal of the year with just 8:44 left in regulation. It was McKay's second goal in as many games after scoring just one time through the first 13 contests of the season.
Bloomsburg had a pair of chances down the stretch but could not get the equalizer. The first opportunity came on a penalty corner with just over three minutes remaining and it looked as if the Huskies had scored the tying goal when a shot beat Bair to the stick side. However, the play was whistled dead and the goal was waived off. Then, with just 54 seconds left in regulation, junior
Brooke Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) redirected a shot just wide left of the goal from just inside the right wing of the circle.
Millersville outshot Bloomsburg, 23-7, for the contest and held a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners on the afternoon. Sheply suffered the loss to fall to 6-6 on the season. The freshman was credited with eight saves. Bair, meanwhile, improved to 11-1 on the year after making a pair of stops.
It was Millersville's tenth consecutive win over the Huskies dating back to Bloomsburg's 1-0 win at Millersville back on September 19, 2012. It was also the Huskies' sixth loss this season decided by one goal as they dropped to 3-6 in such games.
The Huskies will return home on Saturday, September 21 when it hosts IUP at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and it will be Senior Day for the Huskies, who will honor
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area),
Geneka Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area), and
Sally DeLuca (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area) prior to the contest.
