BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team picked up a crucial draw and one point in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings when they tied Wednesday night (Oct. 25) 2-2 with No. 4 Kutztown.
The pace of the match was fast and furious, and both teams had established possessions in their respective offensive ends. In the 10
th minute, the Huskies pushed forward and earned their only corner kick of the first half.
Hannah Miller (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) made it count on her Senior Night, finding
Jessica Supp (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) who headed it home for her third of the year to give BU the 1-0 lead. Kutztown controlled possession in the first half, earning four corner kicks to BU's one, but the Huskies were able to play stout defense and put up enough offensive resistance to take the match to the half up by one. At the break, Kutztown held the advantage in shots 7-4.
Kutztown did not take long to knot the match early on in the second half, earning a corner kick in the 49
th minute. Randi Smith took the corner kick for the Golden Bears, and found Emily Zwiercan on the other end. Zwiercan deflected it in front, and Kristina Miller was there to put it home.
The high-paced match would play on, and Bloomsburg made a push toward the Kutztown net in the 64
th minute.
Maggie McDonald (Burke, Va./West Potomac) received a pass in the middle of the field, before deking her defender and making a mad dash through the middle. The freshmen beat the keeper one on one for her fifth of the year to give BU the 2-1 lead.
The Golden Bears pushed back with effort, continuing to edge the offensive play back toward the opposing net. In the 85
th minute, a cross was played into the Bloomsburg box, and a handball infraction was called. That set up a penalty kick for Maddie Mohr. Mohr beat Huskies keeper
Jenna Hawkins (Hamburg, Pa./Fleetwood) for her 11
th of the season to knot the match at two and shift the momentum back to the visitors.
The match would require two extra sessions, with the first relatively calm compared to regulation. Kutztown had one good look at the net off a corner kick from Smith, whose service was headed toward the net by Maddie Cecere. The potential winner was blocked by
Tayah Naudascher (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), who was stationed on the goal line at the far post. The match played on into the second overtime period.
The two teams cranked up the intensity in the second overtime period, with both teams getting only one or two good looks at the net in the period. Hawkins spoiled Kutztown's best look with a dazzling save on Rachel Rizzo, who had put herself in space off a set corner kick play. Hawkins recovered the ball on a point blank save just before it crossed the line to preserve the draw.
As a result of the draw, Bloomsburg sits in eighth place in the PSAC standings with 27 total points. Bloomsburg totaled 12 shots in the contest, led by four from McDonald and three from
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area).
Rachel Yenney (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), Miller,
Mackenzie Gebhardt (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and
Alexis Rostucher (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) each recorded one. Hawkins (8-4-3) made nine saves in 110:00 between the pipes.
The Huskies will hit the road for their final regular season game on Saturday (Oct. 28) when they travel to Edinboro. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
