GREENSBURG, Pa. - Junior
Brooke Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) scored twice and senior
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) added a single tally as the Bloomsburg University field hockey team closed out the regular season with a 3-1 victory at Seton Hill University on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies conclude the regular season with a 10-8 overall record and a 6-4 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. The Griffins wrapped up their year with a 4-14 overall record and a 1-9 slate in conference play.
The game was scoreless for the first 27 minutes before Zeiders gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead with her seventh goal of the season as she beat Seton Hill's starting goalkeeper Alexandra Piekarz. That marker proved to be the only goal of the first half despite the Huskies holding advantages in both shots, 6-4, and penalty corners, 8-3.
Mahan wasted very little time extending the Bloomsburg lead to 2-0 at the outset of the second half as she buried her team-leading 11th goal of the season just seconds into the second stanza. Sophomore
Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) collected the assist on the goal giving her sole possession of the team lead in that department.
Zeiders then scored her second goal of the game, and eighth of the season, just nine minutes later to balloon the advantage to 3-0. It marked the second time this season that she scored more than one goal in a game - she also notched two goals in the Huskies' 7-0 win over Newberry on September 3.
Bloomsburg was just ten seconds away from preserving the shutout, but Seton Hill's Alesha Herman got the Griffins on the board when she beat freshman goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade). Molly Childress had the assist.
Seton Hill held slight edges in both shots, 6-5, and penalty corners, 4-3, in the second half but the Huskies won the battle in both departments for the game - 11-10 in shots and 11-7 in penalty corners.
Freshman goalkeeper
Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) started for the Huskies and played 60 minutes and change to earn her third victory of the season. She was credited with two saves in the win. Sheply played the final 9:26 in relief. Piekarz and Jane Eberhardt each played a half in goal for the Griffins with each collecting a pair of saves.
The Huskies will travel to fourth-seeded West Chester University in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament on Tuesday, October 31. Time has yet to be determined. The Golden Rams won both matchups between the two teams during the regular season - 5-1 in West Chester on September 12 and 3-1 in Bloomsburg on October 25.
