Men's Basketball Knocks Off Holy Family, 86-67, Tuesday Night

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team scored 53 points in the second half to pull away from visiting Holy Family University en route to an 86-67 victory at the Nelson Field House on Tuesday night. The Huskies snapped a modest two-game losing streak and improved to 3-2 overall on the season. The Tigers, meanwhile, remained winless as they fell to 0-4.

Graduate student Hashim Moore (Sunrise, Fla./Hun School) poured in a career-high 19 points while redshirt senior Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) added 19 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Freshman Matthew Kachelries (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) had the best game of his young career as he chipped in a career-high 18 points to go along with career-bests in steals (4) and blocked shots (3). Sophomore Khary Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) was the fourth Huskies' player in double figures as he finished with 11 points.

Redshirt sophomore Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) got the Huskies on the board quickly with a three-pointer on Bloomsburg's opening possession. However, that lead would be short-lived as the Tigers went on a 12-2 run to take a 12-5 advantage with 14:40 left in the opening half. The Huskies answered with a 7-0 run to knot the game at 12-12 with 12:29 remaining in the opening stanza. Sophomore Austin Harriott (Philadelphia, Pa./Hun School) led the Huskies with three points during the spurt while Mauras and senior Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School) added two points each.

Holy Family regained the lead on a basket from Ryan Corcoran and held the lead until Kachelries hit a pair of foul shots to give Bloomsburg a 25-23 lead with 5:09 left. The Tigers battled back and scored the next five points to recapture a three-point lead before the Huskies closed out the half on an 8-2 run to take a 33-30 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Mortellite had four points during the run and finished with nine first-half points to lead the Huskies in that category.

The visitors would not go quietly as they came out of the dressing room with the first eight points of the second half to take a 38-33 lead with 18:39 left in regulation. The Tigers' lead grew to six, 40-34, just moments later before the Huskies started their torrid shooting from the field. After shooting just 10-of-30 (33.3%) in the first half, Bloomsburg caught fire and the offense was jump-started with three consecutive three-pointers from Mauras, Mortellite, and Saxton to take a 43-40 lead with 16:53 left. Again, the Tigers would not go away as they battled back to reclaim a three-point lead, 51-48, with 13:54 remaining.

Back-to-back baskets from Kachelries gave Bloomsburg a 52-51 lead with 12:34 left and the Huskies never looked back. Over the next 11 minutes, the Huskies scored 29 of the game's next 39 points to build up their largest advantage of the night, 83-63, with 1:58 left. Moore scored 14 points during the run including a stretch where he scored 10 of Bloomsburg's 13 points over a three-minute span.

Bloomsburg shot 20-of-33 (60.6%) from the field in the second half and finished the contest making 30-of-63 (47.6%). The Tigers, meanwhile, shot 27-of-75 (36.8%) from the floor. The Huskies went 8-of-20 from beyond the arc (40.0%) while the Tigers made one more three-pointer but took 12 more attempts to finish 9-of-32 (28.1%). Bloomsburg held a significant advantage from the free throw line, outscoring Holy Family, 18-4, from the stripe.

Moore made 8-of-11 from the field for his career-high 19 points. He added seven rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes. Mortellite was 7-of-16 from the floor and hit three more triples to extend his school record for career three-pointers to 243. He also led the team in assists with six. Kachelries made 6-of-13 from the field and connected on a pair of triples while Mauras made only 3-of-11 from the field en route to 11 points. Mauras did add six rebounds and five assists. Harriott was two points shy of a double-double as he finished with eight points and a career-best ten rebounds.

Mekhi Bryant led Holy Family with 18 points. Terrell Jones had 16 points and 10 rebounds while Maliq Sanders added 15 points and 11 boards. The Huskies did out-rebound the Tigers, 51-38.

Bloomsburg will be back in action on Wednesday, November 29, when it heads to Rutherford, New Jersey for a contest at Felician University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
