HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Bloomsburg University softball team opens its' 2017 campaign this weekend at the Coker College Spring Tournament hosted by Coker College on Feb. 25 and 26. The Huskies will play four total games over the weekend – two on Saturday, and two on Sunday.
 
PREVIEWING THE HUSKIES …
Bloomsburg is coming off a 2016 season that saw it go 45-9, including 19-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), and win the PSAC championship over California, (Pa.).

Bloomsburg comes back with a loaded roster that only lost two seniors (Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) and Erica Keen (Gordonville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan)), and features two players (Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) and Taylor Winkleman) who were two of the 50 student-athletes across the country who have been named to the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association)/Schutt Sports Division II National Player of the Year Watch List.
 
Parker finished the 2016 season with a 1.83 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 17 starts in the circle, and also batted .372 and led the team with 14 home runs.
 
Winkleman meanwhile, batted .409  (Fourth in PSAC) with 76 hits, tied for sixth-most in a single-season in Bloomsburg history.
 
Additionally, Mallory Tomaschik saw action at first base and batted .322 with five home runs and 37 RBI. Also, Maggie Hall saw time at second base in the latter half of the season and hit .350, with nine RBI in 21 games.
 
SCOUTING LINCOLN MEMORIAL
The Lady Railsplitters enter the game with a 6-2 record in 2017. Lincoln Memorial recently went 2-2 in the Cactus Classic, and ae led by Dakotah Fraley, who has a .444 batting average, and five RBI so far this year.
 
In the circle, Justice Smith leads the Lady Railsplitters with three wins and 18 strikeouts in 20 innings of work.
 
SCOUTING KING UNIVERSITY (Tenn.)
The Tornado enter the Coker College Spring Tournament with a record of 3-7, but have won three of their last four games.
 
Junior Hannah Riddle leads the team with 12 hits and a .414 batting average, while senior Hannah Devotie has nine hits and a .346 batting average this season. In the circle, Morgan Matthews has collected two of the three wins for King University this season.
 
SCOUTING UNIVERSITY OF CHARLESTON
Friday evening marks the beginning of the 2017 season for the Golden Eagles, as they battle King University and the West Virginia Institute of Technology at 5 p.m. an 7 p.m., respectively. Charleston went 50-12 in 2016, and made it to the College World Series.

The Golden Eagles will be led by senior Rachelle Toppings, who hit .354 with 79 hits and 41 runs scored last season. In the circle, senior Alli Burdette returns after winning 32 games and posting a 1.63 ERA, along with 203 strikeouts in 2016.
 
SCOUTING FAIRMONT STATE
This will also be the opening weekend for the Fighting Falcons, as they open their season on Saturday at 1 a.m. versus Pfeiffer. Fairmont State went 20-28 in 2016, and fell on the opening day of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) tournament.
 
Senior Abbi Fetty returns as one of the Fighting Falcons' top hitters, as she batted .274 with 35 hits and 13 RBI. Sophomore Hanna Absalom will be the top pitcher in the circle for Fairmont State, as she had a team-high eight wins, and 77 strikeouts in 2016.
