Hartsville, S.C. - The Bloomsburg University softball team earned its' first win of the 2017 season with a 13-12 (8 inn.) defeat of the University of Charleston on Sunday morning. The Huskies trailed, 12-8, entering the bottom of the eighth inning before putting up five runs, including a game-winning RBI single by Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge).
The victory also marked the 200th win for head coach, Susan Kocher (200-90), who is in her seventh season at the helm of the program.
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) (3-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) (3-for-4, 3 runs) led the way for Bloomsburg, while Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) came off of the bench two go 2-for-2 with two home runs, four RBI and two runs scored.
The Huskies fell behind, 4-0, heading to the bottom of the second inning, but took advantage of some errors by the Golden Eagles, and scored four runs to tie the game.
The tie did not last long though, as Charleston quickly put up four more runs in the top of the third inning on RBI singles from Alyssa Stanley, Rachelle Toppings and Karli Pinkerton.
The Huskies would trim the lead in the fifth inning on a RBI double by Abby Remley, and would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Impink.
The two teams would fail to score in the seventh inning, but the Golden Eagles would strike in the top of the eighth, putting up four runs to take a 12-8 lead. Bloomsburg would have the bottom of the inning to tie or win the game, and the Huskies would respond in a big way.
Impink launched her second round-tripper of the game to centerfield, and drove in Casey as well to make it a 12-10 contest. Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) would tie the game later in the inning on a single to center, scoring Hall and Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield).
Finally, Casey would step into the batter's box with the bases loaded, and deliver the game-winning single, scoring Abby Remley.
Bloomsburg moves to 1-2 on the year and will play Fairmont State later today.
