LAST TIME OUT ...
Bloomsburg lost for just the second time in the last eight games - an 82-56 setback to Shippensburg at the Nelson Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders blew open the game in the second quarter as they outscored the Huskies, 25-9, to take a 46-25 lead at halftime. Shippensburg also shot 64.0% from the field in the first half and made 9-of-14 from beyond the arc in the opening twenty minutes. In the loss, senior
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) became the 21st player in school history to record 1,000 career points as she finished with a team-high 17.
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) added 11 while
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) finished with 10. Shippensburg had five players in double figures, led by Lauren Gold's 17 points.
Â
STARTING FIVE ...
1 - Senior
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) became the 21st player in school history to record 1,000 career points when she nailed a three-pointer with 2:59 left in regulation against Shippensburg on Saturday. She finished the game with 17 points and has an even 1,000 points for her career. The senior is on milestone watch in two other categories - rebounds and assists. She is now 25 rebounds and 24 assists shy of reaching 500 career rebounds and 300 career assists to go along with her 1,000 career points. Klunk has also moved into 12th place on the school's all-time list for career assists with 276. She needs two helpers to tie Dana Wieller (2009-13) for 11th on the list and four to tie Holly Curnow (1995-99) for 10th place.
2 - After a 1-12 start, the Huskies have won six of their last eight games and are currently in fifth place in the PSAC Eastern Division with a 7-14 overall record and a 6-11 mark in league play. While Bloomsburg is still only 17th in the conference in scoring offense at 56.5 points per game, the Huskies have shown improvement on the offensive end during the eight-game stretch. Bloomsburg is averaging 61.2 points per game during its last eight games and that includes a 53-37 win over Mansfield on January 11 and a 52-43 victory over Millersville on January 14 to start the run.
3 - Defensively, the Huskies are ranked sixth in the conference in scoring defense (62.5) and have limited opponents to under 70 points in a game 15 times this season. Over the last eight games (six wins), the Huskies have allowed a total of 473 points (59.1 per game). Bloomsburg is seventh in the PSAC in opponents' field-goal percentage (38.9%) and tenth in opponents' three-point percentage (29.9%). Those numbers took a huge hit on Saturday as Shippensburg shot 57.1% from the field and 63.2% from long distance. It also ranks second in the league in blocks per game (4.7) and fifth in steals per game (8.5).
4 - The Huskies have turned to some unsung heroes to contribute during the hot streak. Sophomore
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) has started each of the last 12 games, averaging 31.2 minutes in those 12 starts, and is posting 6.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists over her last 13 contests. Freshman
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) earned the PSAC East Freshman of the Week on Monday, January 30, and is averaging 9.7 points and 4.8 rebounds over her last eight games while shooting 53.7% from the field during the stretch. And, sophomore
Marissa Molnar (Erie, Pa./McDowell) reached double-figures in scoring in back-to-back games - 14 at Cheyney and 13 vs West Chester - after hitting double figures only twice in her first 40 collegiate contests. She scored eight against Shippensburg on Saturday and is averaging 11.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in her last three games.
5 - The Huskies have a very young roster that features only two seniors -
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) and
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) - and no juniors. The rest of the 12-player roster is comprised of five sophomores, one redshirt freshman, and four true freshmen. One of the sophomores,
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area), joins the team for the first time this season. Barber was an All-PSAC Second Team selection and an NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) All-Atlantic Region Third Team honoree for the Huskies' women's soccer team this fall.
THE SERIES ...
Millersville leads the all-time series against Bloomsburg, 42-40.
LAST MEETING AGAINST MILLERSVILLE ...
Bloomsburg jumped out to a 35-21 halftime lead and held off Millersville, 52-43, at the Nelson Field House on January 14. The Huskies managed only three third-quarter points - a three-pointer from
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) with 2:33 left in the period - but limited the Marauders to only eight points during the quarter. Millersville cut the lead for four in the fourth but the Huskies hung on for the nine-point win.
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) led the Huskies with 14 points while
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) had nine points and nine rebounds. Despite fouling out in the third quarter, Celeste Robinson led the Marauders with 13 points.
Â
SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS ...
Millersville enters the contest with a one-game lead on Bloomsburg in the PSAC Eastern Division as it comes in with a 9-13 overall record and a 7-10 mark against league opponents. Millersville scored a season-high 81 points at East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon but suffered a 90-81 loss to the Warriors to remain only one game ahead of the Huskies for fourth place in the division. Like the Huskies, the Marauders have struggled at times offensively and rank only 14th in the PSAC in scoring offense (58.8). Millersville, however, is seventh in the PSAC in points allowed (63.2 per game). Celeste Robinson leads the Marauders in scoring as she is fourth in the PSAC at 16.7 points per game. She is fourth in the league in fied goal percentage (56.5%) and ranks tied for third in the conference in steals per game (2.6). Alayah Hall is the only other Marauder in double figures as she averages 12.1 points per game. Hall leads the team in assists per game (2.7). Aunjel Van Brakle (8.8 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and Courtney Hinnant (8.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg) are first and second on the team in rebounding. Van Brakle is also tied for third in the PSAC in blocks per game (1.8).
HEATING UP ...
Senior
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) has hit double figures in scoring in each of the last six games and is averaging 12.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists during the stretch. Freshman
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) scored a career-high 19 points at Lock Haven on Wednesday, January 25, and is averaging 9.7 points and 4.8 rebounds over her last eight games. She has hit 29-of-54 (53.7%) from the field during the stretch. Sophomore
Marissa Molnar (Erie, Pa./McDowell) has been in double figures in two of the last three games and is averaging 11.7 points and 2.7 rebounds during the spurt.
ONE MILESTONE DOWN ...
Senior
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) became the 21st player in school history to record 1,000 career points when she poured in 17 against Shippensburg on Saturday. She has a chance to hit two more milestones during the season and become one of a handful of players in program history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 300 assists. She needs 25 rebounds and 24 assists to hit the other two figures.
DEE-FENSE ...
Despite Bloomsburg's scoring woes for much of the season, the Huskies have been in a number of games because they have been able to keep their opponents off the board. Bloomsburg's defense has allowed 70 or more points in a game only six times and has limited its opponents only 62.5 points per game. That figure is sixth-best in the PSAC. Over the last eight games, in which Bloomsburg has gone 6-2, the Huskies have allowed a total of 473 points (59.1 per game).
DO-IT-ALL ...
Senior
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) has done some of everything for the Huskies this season and leads the team, or is near the top, in almost every statistical category. She ranks third on the team in scoring (9.2), second in rebounding (5.5), first in assists (2.7), first in blocks (1.5), and second in steals (1.3). Her game has really picked up during the Huskies' 6-2 stretch. She has hit double figures in each of the last six games and is averaging 10.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.6 blocks over the last ten contests.
MONTANA PSAC EAST FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK ...
Freshman
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) earned the first weekly honor of the season for a Bloomsburg player when she was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Week on Monday, January 30. During the 2-0 week for the Huskies, she scored a career-high 19 points at Lock Haven (January 25) and then added seven at Cheyney (January 28) to average 13.0 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 61.1% from the field in the Bloomsburg wins.
BLOCK PARTY ...
The Huskies are second in the conference, and 24th in the country, in blocked shots per game (4.8). The Huskies have blocked at least four shots in 15 of the 21 games and have blocked ten shots in a game twice - against Chestnut Hill on November 22 and at Philadelphia on November 27. Senior
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) has taken over the team lead as she averages 1.5 blocks per game - seventh in the PSAC. Freshman
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) is tied for tenth in the league at 1.1 while freshman
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) is tied for 12th as she averages exactly one block per game. Montana, Ross, and Corridoni have combined for 72 of the team's 99 blocks.
UP NEXT ...
Bloomsburg will have a bye on Saturday afternoon and will not play again until next Wednesday, February 15, when it heads to Mansfield University for a 5:30 p.m. start. The Huskies will be looking for the season sweep as Bloomsburg posted a 53-37 victory over the Mountaineers at the Nelson Field House on January 11.
