LAKELAND, Fla. - The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team got off to a slow start on Monday night and suffered its first loss of the young season after a 21-10 setback at fifth-ranked Florida Southern. The Huskies dropped to 2-1 on the year while the Moccasins improved to 9-2 overall.
Junior
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) paced the Huskies' offense with four goals while senior
Brigid Kyne (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) added two goals and an assist. Freshman
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) also scored twice for the Huskies in the setback.
Florida Southern wasted little time jumping on the Huskies as it scored three goals in the first 1:43 to take a 3-0 advantage. The Moccasins continued with the offense as it scored four more goals over the next nine minutes to take a 7-0 lead with 19:25 left in the opening half.
Freshman
Erin Boulger (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) got Bloomsburg on the board with her second goal of the season at 16:42 and Turner followed with her fourth tally of the year just over a minute later to cut the Moccasins' lead to 7-2.
But, three goals from Florida Southern extended the lead to 10-2 before senior Kyne buried her fifth goal of the year with 8:22 left to cut the deficit to seven.
Turner scored the Huskies' other goal of the first half but Florida Southern continued to pour it on and held a 16-4 advantage at the end of thirty minutes.
Bloomsburg battled back at the outset of the second half as the Huskies scored the first six goals after the break to cut the lead to 16-10 with 11:47 left in regulation. Freshman
Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) scored her second goal of the season to start the flurry. Gormley added a pair of tallies - goals number two and three on the year - to trim the lead to 16-7 with 14:45 left. Kyne followed with her sixth of the season and Turner added back-to-back goals as the Huskies pulled to within six.
The Moccasins, however, scored the final five goals of the night to end any thoughts of a miraculous Bloomsburg comeback.
Freshman
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) suffered the loss in goal as she stopped nine Florida Southern shots.
Florida Southern held a 31-15 shot advantage and also held a significant edge in ground balls, 19-9. The Moccasins also won 19 of the 31 draw controls on the night.
Cayla Shawfield and Meghan O'Brien each scored four goals for the Moccasins while Emily Santoli (three goals, two assists) and Dani Bursinger (two goals, three assists) chipped in with five points apiece. Alanna Zambetti stopped five shots to earn the win.
Bloomsburg will be at the University of Tampa to play the Spartans on Wednesday night, March 15. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
