BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Millersville University scored with 13 seconds left in regulation to hand the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team an 11-10 loss at Steph Pettit Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The setback dropped the Huskies to 5-3 overall and evened their record at 2-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. The Marauders, meanwhile, improved to identical marks of 5-3 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Senior
Brigid Kyne (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) paced the Huskies' offense with four goals on the afternoon, giving her a team-leading 16 markers on the season. Freshman
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) added a pair of goals while junior
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) chipped in with one goal and one assist. Sophomore
Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) also had a multiple-point game as she assisted on a pair of Huskies' goals.
The Marauders jumped out to a 1-0 lead before the Huskies rattled off three straight goals in the span of 82 seconds to take a 3-1 lead with 25:05 left in the first half. Freshman
Sydney Collins (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), Kyne, and senior
Nikki Fisher (Warminster, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy ) scored the Bloomsburg goals during the spurt. Millersville tied the game at 3-3 on back-to-back goals from Jamie Damirgian before the Huskies, again, scored two unanswered to take a 5-3 advantage at halftime. Freshman
Danielle Ward (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township) gave Bloomsburg a 4-3 lead with her first collegiate goal and then Gormley added her first of two goals on the afternoon to extend the lead to two.
Bloomsburg outshot Millersville, 17-11, in the first half.
Gormley extended the lead to 6-3 just 22 seconds into the second half with her second goal of the game and tenth of the season before the Marauders scored four unanswered goals to take a 7-6 advantage with 15:34 left in regulation.
Back came Kyne and the Huskies as the senior scored a pair of free-position goals in the span of 53 seconds to regain the Huskies' lead at 8-7 with 13:48 remaining. The teams exchanged goals over the next seven minutes and Bloomsburg still found itself leading, 10-9, with 6:48 left in regulation.
However, Millersville's Erin Fagan tied the game at 10-10 with 6:02 left to set up the finish. Both teams had opportunities to score down the stretch but were unable to dent the scoreboard. Then, after a turnover inside the Millersville zone, the Marauders grabbed the loose ball and, essentially, played for the final shot. Millersville was awarded a free-position shot with 16 seconds left and, instead of taking the shot, Damirgian elected to pass the ball to a wide-open Callie Kavanaugh who beat freshman goalkeeper
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) for the go-ahead goal with 13 seconds left.
The Marauders then won the ensuing draw control to end any hopes of a game-tying tally by the Huskies.
Millersville outshot Bloomsburg, 14-12, in the second half but the Huskies held a slim, 29-27, advantage for the contest. DiPasquale stopped eight Millersville shots to fall to 5-3 on the season. Bryanna Weston-Wyatt played only the second half but earned the victory to improve to 1-1 on the year. She stopped five shots.
Damirgian led Millersville with three goals and two assists in the victory.
The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, April 1, when they host Slippery Rock University at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
