BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Freshman goalkeeper
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) turned aside a career-high 14 shots to lift the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team to a 5-3 victory over previously-unbeaten Slippery Rock University on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. With the victory, the Huskies improved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while The Rock dropped to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.
DiPasquale did her best work in the second half as she stopped 12 of Slippery Rock's 13 shots on goal over the course of the final 30 minutes. Six of her twelve saves during the second half came on free-position shot attempts by Slippery Rock, including one with 2:34 left in regulation that could have cut the lead to one. The visitors held a significant, 18-5, margin in shots in the second half, but DiPasquale and the Huskies' defensive unit made a 4-2 halftime advantage stand to knock The Rock from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Freshman
Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) started the scoring with her fifth goal of the season just 1:55 into the contest to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead on a free-position goal. However, the visitors responded when Tia Torchia beat DiPasquale, less than a minute later, with her first of two goals on the afternoon. Freshman
Danielle Ward (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township) regained the one-goal lead for the Huskies with her second goal of the season with 22:23 left in the first half and then senior
Brigid Kyne (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) buried her team-leading 17th goal of the year just over three minutes later to give Bloomsburg a 3-1 advantage.
Slippery Rock pulled to within a goal, 3-2, when Caitlynn Palladino scored with 17:34 left in the first half.
Then, the SRU offense hit a dry spell.
Sophomore
Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) scored her 12th goal of the season with just 1:16 left in the first half to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead at intermission. Bloomsburg outshot Slippery Rock, 12-5, in the first half with three of the Huskies' four first-half goals coming on free-position shots.
The Huskies took their largest lead of the game, 5-2, when freshman
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) scored on a free-position shot - her 11th tally of the season - with 16:25 left in regulation. Torchia pulled Slippery Rock to within two goals, 5-3, two minutes later with her second goal of the game and 16th marker of the season. But, that goal proved to be the final tally of the afternoon as DiPasquale and the Huskies' defense clamped down.
Slippery Rock outshot Bloomsburg, 18-5, in the second half and held a 23-17 advantage over the course of the contest. The Rock also held a 22-19 advantage in ground balls, including a 14-9 margin in the final thirty minutes. But, the telling story of the contest came on free-position attempts - Bloomsburg was 4-of-9 while Slippery Rock was unable to convert on ten free-position shots.
DiPasquale improved to 6-3 on the season with her 14-save performance. It marked the second time this season that she has recorded double-digit saves in a game - her previous high was 11 in the Huskies' 8-4 win at Shippensburg on March 18. Meanwhile, Emily Bitka suffered the loss in goal for Slippery Rock after turning aside five shots. She dropped to 7-1 on the season.
Bloomsburg will now play three straight contests on the road, beginning with a trip to West Chester on Tuesday, April 4. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
