Baseball Slugs Its Way To Doubleheader Sweep Over Clarion On Tuesday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team hit eight home runs on Tuesday afternoon - six in game one - as it cruised to a doubleheader sweep over visiting Clarion University at a sun-drenched Danny Litwhiler Field. The Huskies took game one by a 15-1 score and then completed the sweep with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap to improve to 18-12-1 overall. The Golden Eagles fell to 7-18 on the season.

Freshman Tyler Nowmos (Wrightstown, Pa./Council Rock North) overshadowed a number of big offensive performances for the Huskies in game one as he became the first Bloomsburg player since computerized stats were kept, beginning in 2000, to hit three home runs in one game as he went deep in the third, fourth, and sixth innings of the opener. The freshman entered the day with just six at bats through the first 29 games of the season. He finished the opener by going 3-for-5 with four runs scored and five runs batted in.

Junior Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township), sophomore Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South), and redshirt junior Cy Treaster (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) also belted home runs in the game one victory as the Huskies scored at least one run in all six innings.

The Huskies wasted no time jumping on Clarion starter, Chance Miranda, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Redshirt junior Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) led off with a single back up the middle and then scored when Benson hammered a 2-0 pitch over the left center field fence for his fifth home run of the season.

Clarion got its only run in the top of the second with an unearned run against Bloomsburg freshman starter, Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury). But, the Huskies scored two more in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-1 advantage. Sophomore Joey Wrabel (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and Edgette drew back-to-back one-out walks and Benson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Miranda recorded a strikeout, Shiffer came through with a two-run single to left center with two outs to give the Huskies a three-run lead.

Nowmos and Treaster belted back-to-back solo home runs in the third to give the Huskies a 6-1 lead. The Nowmos home run was the first of his collegiate career and came on a 1-0 pitch from Clarion reliever Tom McCloskey. Treaster's home run was his first of the season and his first since homering in both games of a doubleheader at IUP on April 21, 2015. His big fly also came on a 1-0 offering.

The Huskies blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning to take an 11-1 advantage. After freshman Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) was hit by a pitch with one out, Nowmos connected again off  McCloskey, this time on a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence to give the hosts an 8-1 lead. Wrabel kept the inning alive by getting hit with a pitch and Edgette followed with a single to center, which was bobbled to allow both runners to move to second and third. Benson greeted Clarion reliever Brendan Fitzgerald with a two-run single through the right side of the infield to give Bloomsburg a 10-1 lead. Two batters later, Shiffer doubled down the left field line to score Benson for a ten-run lead.

Bloomsburg added another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Benson and then scored three more in the sixth on a solo home run from Shiffer and a two-run blast from Nowmos - his third of the game.

The Huskies finished the opener with 14 hits but also took advantage of eight walks and five hit batsmen against five Clarion pitchers. Benson finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and five runs batted in. He was on base in all five of his plate appearances. Shiffer was 3-for-5 with four runs batted in while Edgette was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Cooperman pitched the first three innings but did not factor in the decision. He allowed an unearned run on four hits while striking out five. Redshirt freshman Mark Bobko (Metuchen, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) earned his first collegiate victory by tossing the final four scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and struck out three to improve to 1-1 on the season.

In game two, the Huskies picked up right where they left off by taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Shiffer started the scoring with a two-run double, plating Edgette who struck out but reached on a wild pitch, and Benson who walked. Two batters later, Swiger hit his sixth home run of the season - a two-run shot on an 0-2 pitch from Clarion starter Dillon Wolbert - to give the Huskies a 4-0 advantage.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of some sloppy play in the top second to score a pair of runs against junior starter Mike Vranesich (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo). Clarion scored its two runs without the benefit of a hit as it took advantage of a pair of walks, a wild pitch, and a pair of Huskies' errors.

Bloomsburg got a run back in the bottom of the second as Benson hit his second home run of the day with one out and nobody on. The junior entered the season with five career home runs in 257 career at bats but is tied for the team lead, with Swiger, in home runs with six this season.

Clarion wouldn't go away, however, as it scored two more runs in the top of the third to cut the Bloomsburg lead to 5-4. After an error, a wild pitch, and a walk, Vranesich was pulled for freshman Aaron Kulp (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown Area), who was making his first collegiate appearance. Kulp struck out his first batter but then walked the next and unleashed a wild pitch to give Clarion its first run of the inning. An RBI single from Cole Shaffer pulled the Golden Eagles to within a run before Kulp got out of the inning without any further damage.

The offense came to a halt until the bottom of the fifth when the Huskies plated a pair of runs to take a 7-4 lead. Treaster drove home the first run of the inning with a single up the middle to score freshman Blake Gular (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) who walked to lead off the inning. Swiger, who reached on a single, later scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.

Bloomsburg added two more in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Swiger and a run-scoring wild pitch as Shiffer crossed the plate for the final run of the game. The visitors made things interesting in the seventh as they loaded the bases with nobody out against sophomore Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area). But, the righthander retired the final three batters on a pair of strikeouts and an infield pop-up to end the game.

Swiger posted a career-high four hits in game two as he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Senior Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) and Shiffer each added a pair of hits in the victory.

Vranesich lasted only two innings and allowed four runs (two earned) without giving up a hit. He walked four and struck out three. Kulp picked up the win in his first collegiate effort as he went three scoreless innings. The righthander allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three. Redshirt freshman James Reardon IV (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) pitched a scoreless sixth and Zezza pitched a scoreless seventh.

Bloomsburg will jump back into divisional play on Friday, April 14, and Saturday, April 15, with a pair of doubleheaders against Lock Haven. Friday's doubleheader will be at Danny Litwhiler Field while Saturday's twinbill will be in Lock Haven. Both days start at 1:00 p.m.
