BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team dropped a pair of contests against visiting Lock Haven University on Friday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field. The Huskies suffered a 10-0 loss in game one and then fell by a 13-10 final, in eight innings, in the nightcap to drop to 18-14-1 overall and 6-7-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Bald Eagles, meanwhile, improved to 22-8 overall and 10-4 in divisional play.
Game one featured a pitcher's duel between Bloomsburg junior starter
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) and Lock Haven reliever Nick Hornbaker. Hornbaker replaced Lock Haven ace, Jacob Belinda, in the bottom of the second inning after Belinda had to be removed from the game due to an apparent injury. The Huskies had two hits in the first inning against Belinda - back-to-back two-out singles from senior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) and sophomore
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) - but could not score.
Warren made one mistake in the first six innings as Lock Haven's Evan McFarland led off the top of the third inning with a solo home run over the left field fence.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of Lock Haven until the seventh when the Bald Eagles blew the game open with nine runs in their final at bat. Lock Haven sent 14 batters to the plate in the seventh against three Bloomsburg pitchers - Warren, who pitched to four batters; freshman
Brett Alaimo (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), who pitched to two batters; and redshirt freshman
James Reardon IV (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), who closed out the inning. All told, the visitors scored nine runs on five hits, two errors, three walks, and two wild pitches. The big blow of the inning was a grand slam home run from Nick Stotler.
The Huskies managed only four hits in six innings against Hornbaker, who walked one and struck out seven for his first win of the season (1-0). Warren pitched six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits. He walked one and struck out five.
Muth led the Huskies with a pair of hits in the opener.
Plenty of offense was provided by both teams in game two as the teams combined for 23 runs and 27 hits.
After a scoreless first inning, Lock Haven got on the board with a run in the top of the second against sophomore starter
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) to take a 1-0 lead. But, the Huskies retaliated with four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman
Tyler Nowmos (Wrightstown, Pa./Council Rock North) started the rally when he was hit by a pitch from Lock Haven starter, Mike Anthony. Freshman
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) followed with a walk to put runners at first and second with one out. After Anthony retired freshman
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock) for the second out of the inning, the righthander uncorked a wild pitch to advance both runners 90 feet. Redshirt junior
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) came through with a double down the right field line to plate the first two runs of the inning - his second of three hits in the nightcap. Then, after junior
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) walked, Muth drove home Edgette with a single to left that was misplayed by the left fielder and rolled almost to the fence allowing both Edgette and Benson to score for the final two runs of the inning.
Lock Haven came back with a pair of runs in the top of the third to cut the Bloomsburg advantage to 4-3. Stotler reached on an infield single and then scored when Matt Lahn launched a home run to right center.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Huskies added three runs to take a 7-3 lead. Krizan led off the inning with a single and then advanced to third on a double by Edgette. Benson followed with a two-run double over the head of the right fielder to give Bloomsburg a 6-3 advantage. A pair of Lock Haven errors contributed to the Huskies' third run of the inning as Benson scored when redshirt senior
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) reached on a miscue.
But, the visitors got all three runs back in the top of the fifth against Raines, cutting the Huskies' lead to 7-6. All three runs in the inning were unearned.
The Huskies brought sophomore
Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) out of the bullpen to start the sixth but the Bald Eagles were able to tie the game at 7-7 when Lahn singled to center field, driving home Cayden Stover who reached on a one-out walk. Bloomsburg answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 10-7 lead. Benson doubled to lead off the inning and then advanced to third on a single from Muth. Shiffer appeared to be the latest Bloomsburg hero when he launched a three-run home run to left center on a 0-1 pitch from Anthony. But, the Bald Eagles answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 10-10. Sam Kysor drove home the first run on an RBI single and then Hunter Szaflarski tied the game with a two-run double.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies got a pair of runners on base against Lock Haven reliever Breton Larose but could not score which sent the game to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Lock Haven's Keyshawn D'Orso led off the inning with, what appeared to be a harmless fly ball to left field. But, the ball was misplayed and dropped in for a leadoff double. Cooperman, who came on in relief during the seventh, retired the next two batters, but could not get Jamie Eshleman as he delivered the go-ahead RBI single to center field. Later in the inning, Szaflarski added some insurance with a two-run single to left to extend the Lock Haven lead to 13-10. In the bottom of the eighth, the Huskies made things interesting against Larose. Freshman
Blake Gular (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second when redshirt junior
Cy Treaster (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) was also plunked on an offering from Larose to put runners at first and second with two outs. Cooperman kept the inning alive with a single through the right side of the infield to load the bases for Krizan. The freshman hit a high chopper that was corralled by the third baseman who then stepped on the bag to end the contest.
Edgette and Benson each had three hits in game two while Muth added two more hits in the nightcap as the Huskies had 11 hits against two Lock Haven pitchers. Szaflarski and Lahn combined to go 6-for-9 with eight runs batted in for Lock Haven.
Raines went five innings and allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three. Zezza and Cooperman (0-2) combined to allow seven runs on nine hits over the final three innings.
The two teams will battle in a twinbill on Saturday afternoon at Lock Haven's Stern Athletic Complex. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
